About the Opportunity

Job Summary:

The CNC Machinist & Programmer position in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department's machine shop will have job duties that include: (1) Fabricating metal and polymer parts using manual and/or CNC/NC machine tools for design students, student activity groups, research faculty and clients, and graduate students. (Manual machine operations including set-up & tool selection on conventional lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses and various other standard shop equipment. CNC machine operations include setting-up and producing products on CNC/NC machines with machine adjustments as necessary.) (2) The expectation is to apply industry standard machine tool techniques to ensure high-quality part requirements are met. (3) Maintain machining equipment, perform and or assist in scheduled preventive maintenance, and order supplies. (4) Coordinate acquisition of new equipment, seeking quotes and advising on equipment purchases. (5) Supervise work-study students in the machine shop. (6) Work with department to coordinate across other Northeastern units to support wider machining needs. (7) Consult with Capstone design directors, faculty, and students as well as student activity groups regarding machining projects/activities. (8) Advise and mentor students in best practices for part design. (9) Assist in training student machine operators.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is strongly preferred. This CNC Machinist & Programmer will have the responsibility to: (1) Perform all machinist functions. (2) Manufacture components using manual and/or automated machining tools. (3) Must read/interpret CAD plans/files as well as provide design advice when needed. (4) Ability to manage multiple machining jobs under tight deadlines. (6) Ability to mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in best practices for machining, support student project work and research work by machining parts as needed and maintain shop safety. (7) Ability to maintain manual and computer aided machining equipment. (8) Demonstrate knowledge of CAM/CAD software programming. (9) Proficiency with MS office suite (Excel, Outlook, etc.). (10) Flexibility to work occasional Saturday preferred.
