Visiting Faculty Fellow
Arizona State University: Office of the University Provost Polytechnic and Tempe: Barrett, The Honors College

Location: Mesa and Tempe, AZ

Description

Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University invites applications for one Visiting Faculty Fellow position. The main responsibility of the Visiting Faculty Fellow involves teaching a rigorous two-semester interdisciplinary seminar, The Human Event (https://barretthonors.asu.edu/academics/lower-division-curriculum), in which students examine primary materials reflecting diverse intellectual traditions from earliest writings to the present.
This discussion-based class requires students' active participation and focuses on developing their skills in critical thinking and argumentative writing. Faculty are encouraged to mentor students in innovative ways that enrich their honors experience. We have a strong peer mentoring program to help faculty develop their teaching and professional skills.

Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriching and challenging academic experience that prepares them to become leaders in their communities and better citizens of the world. Incoming Barrett students have an average unweighted GPA of 3.81 and are often in the top ten percent of their high school classes. Our student body is highly diverse, comprising 45% of students from underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities from the U.S. and internationally; and 12% first-generation, with majors across the University. Barrett operates at four ASU campuses throughout the greater Phoenix area and more recently developed a partnership with ASU Online.

We seek to fill one full-time visiting faculty fellow whose primary responsibility will be to teach multiple sections of the first-year Human Event seminar. The workload is 100% teaching, with a standard teaching load of 4-4 (with one course preparation only). The position will be split between the Polytechnic and Tempe campuses, with the fellow teaching two classes on each campus each semester. As a multidisciplinary faculty, we welcome applications from candidates with training in any field and an enthusiasm for interdisciplinarity. Barrett values cultural and intellectual diversity and continually strives to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment. We are especially interested in applicants who can strengthen the diversity of our academic community. The position begins August 2023; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.
