Job Description Summary

Building on successful programs of other Wharton research centers, the Institute is launching a program for predoctoral research fellowships in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship. These are full-time staff-level research assistant positions, ideal for highly qualified college graduates who are motivated to acquire the research skills, experience, and credentials needed to apply for a full-time PhD program. Awards will cover the predoctoral researcher's salary and benefits for a maximum of two years.

Job Description

The Mack Institute for Innovation Management is continuously seeking new ways to support cutting-edge research and train a new generation of management scholars. Building on successful programs of other Wharton research centers, the Institute is launching a program for predoctoral research fellowships in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship. These are full-time staff-level research assistant positions, ideal for highly qualified college graduates who are motivated to acquire the research skills, experience, and credentials needed to apply for a full-time PhD program. Awards will cover the predoctoral researcher's salary and benefits for a maximum of two years.

The successful candidate will support research by Wharton management professor David Hsu and Wharton marketing professor Pinar Yildirim. The candidate will work on topics related to entrepreneurial and innovation (E&I) ecosystems (deploying data assets and analytic methods to characterize ecosystem emergence, growth, and possible decline), as well as online dating (estimating the impact of online dating platforms on relationship outcomes and mental health). The faculty members will provide supervision on research and offer mentorship on academic development more broadly, with the goal of ensuring that the fellow is well prepared to advance into top-tier PhD programs. Fellows will also be encouraged to be an active part of the Wharton research community, including within the Management department and the Mack Institute.

Job responsibilities may include: collecting, designing, implementing and maintaining moderately complex databases; using access methods, access time device allocation validation checks, reorganization and statistical methods. Perform a variety of statistical and econometric analyses. Write reports and provide research-related programming support.

Independent thinking, a thorough understanding of economics, math and or/statistics, and self motivation are critical for this position. The ability to analyze data requirements, maintain database dictionaries, and integration of systems through database design is essential. Must work proficiently in most phases of database management.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze data requirements; maintain database dictionaries and integration of systems; design implement and maintain moderately complex databases
  • Research various data resources and perform a variety of statistical and econometric analyses
  • Process data; develop databases that are easily used by faculty members utilizing (Stata, R Python, Matlab, SQL) software applications
  • Prepare supporting materials for faculty research papers such as graphs, tables, data descriptions, appendices, etc
  • Run economic, finance, statistical models, analyze data and make projections
  • Write research reports and provide research-related programming support
  • Review and revise data to evaluate accuracy and consistency as requested by faculty


Qualifications

BA/BS required / masters degree preferred in the fields of economics, statistics, mathematics, computer science or other closely-related discipline. 1-2 years research experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience as a research assistant or pursuit of independent research is preferred. Proven data analysis skills and computer programming skills are necessary.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
