Department Summary
The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916, and is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,500 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland. Undergraduate majors offered on the Eugene campus are in journalism, advertising, media studies, and public relations. The SOJC also currently offers two undergraduate minors: media studies and science communication.
As a community of media and communication scholars, journalists, strategic communicators, and content producers, the SOJC continuously strives to create a more just, equitable, and inclusive society as part of our mission. The SOJC employs approximately 100 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees as well as over 50 student employees.
Position Summary
This position provides integrated career and academic advising for a diverse population of current and prospective undergraduate majors and minors in the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC). This work is conducted within a dynamic team setting that comprises other professional advisors. It reports to the Director of Student Services but also receives training and additional project assignment and supervision from the Associate and Assistant Directors in the unit.
Administrative and programming duties may include coordinating with faculty directors/advisors on academic and career programming (e.g. Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism, SOJC Honors Program, etc.) and/or facilitating unit-initiated services and programs (e.g. workshops, social media, etc.). As the school concentrates on maintaining and exceeding its high recruitment and retention rates, this position will support the unit's leadership in both internal and campus-wide career and academic advising initiatives and recruiting events.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree.
- One year of advising or counseling experience with students or
adult learners in education, career, and/or academic services and
topics.
Professional Competencies
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Forms respectful relationships with individuals representing
diverse social identities (e.g. race, gender, disability status,
religion, etc.).
- Strong computer skills and ability to use technology and social
media to deliver services.
- Excellent time management and organization skills.
- Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
- Ability to organize timelines, tasks, and priorities for
long-term projects and/or event planning.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to think
creatively.
Preferred Qualifications
- A master's degree in social work, counseling, marriage and
family therapy, student services/student affairs, higher education,
or a related area.
- At least three years of student academic advising and/or career
advising experience at a college/university level.
- An understanding of equity issues and barriers that diverse
students may face, including those from non-traditional
backgrounds.
- Knowledge of student development theory as it relates to
academic advising.
- Experience supporting and developing programs for students,
clients, customers, or similar.
