Department Summary
The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 400 student staff and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU welcomes students, faculty, staff, the community, and visitors to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity and social interaction. The EMU is student-centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who are actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approving the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.
Position Summary
The Program Director for the Outdoor Program is a staff member of the Erb Memorial Union (EMU) and reports to the Associate Director of the EMU. This position is responsible for providing strategic direction and vision for the Outdoor Program. It has administrative oversight of the program including a budget, personnel, facilities, risk management, and extensive programming. This position serves as an advocate for the value of lifelong learning, active lifestyles, and the outdoors, as such it assists in programming a wide variety of outdoor activities, the UO Bike Program, a rental program, and educational events.
This position is primarily on-site with the occasional opportunity for remote work based on unit operations.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and
experience.
- Three years professional experience managing or having a
leadership role in an outdoor recreational program.
- Two years experience in personnel management, including
supervision, evaluation, and development of professional and
student staff.
- Two years experience managing an organizational
budget.
- Two years experience managing risk.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree, or equivalent combination of education and
experience.
- Five or more years of professional work experience managing
outdoor recreational activities and operations.
- Understanding of student development theory and
practices.
- Experience with supervision, mentoring, and staff management in
a higher education setting.
- Demonstrated ability in strategic plan development and
implementation.
- Experience in leadership development.
- Experience in program assessment.
- Demonstrated high-level proficiency and/or certification in
three or more of the following skill areas: rock climbing,
mountaineering, nordic, backcountry and alpine skiing, white water
kayaking and rafting, ocean kayaking, mountain biking, bike
touring, backpacking, sailing, other self-propelled wilderness
travel, avalanche assessment, river rescue, mountain rescue, and
wilderness first aid.
- Wilderness first responder certification.
