Position Summary
Perform work related to moving and delivery operations, including the moving of furniture and equipment, and the delivery of mail, freight, parcels and supplies stocked at or received by the Materials Management Department or MDC .
This position reports directly to the Distribution Services Manager or designee and as one of several Route Driver positions, works either alone or in teams in performing required duties. The position carries no designated supervisory responsibilities over other classifications in the department, except supervision of student and extra-help employees from time to time, and training supervision of new employees assigned to a team. The position is administratively responsible to the Director of Campus Services or designee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Delivery Responsibilities- 30%
- Provide special pick-ups between route deliveries, and provide courier service deliveries for express items and perishable receipts.
- Load and deliver weekly food orders to residence halls, accomplish deliveries of bakery goods prepared daily by the university’s bakery and transfer food supplies between residence halls as required.
- Make off-campus deliveries and pick-ups as assigned, during which authorized travel costs are logged, reported, and reimbursed (when applicable).
- Responsible for the care and safe operation of delivery vehicles and material handling equipment, including necessary housekeeping of vehicle interiors and loading areas of the Dorland Building, and regular checks of fluid levels of vehicles.
- Secure necessary signatures on all paperwork accompanying deliveries, transfers, pick-ups, etc., and turn in completed documentation each day, reporting to the Supervisor any incidents of breakage, damage, shortage or loss.
- Responsible for the care of equipment, keys, locks, and other items provided.
- Load/deliver freight and supplies to academic buildings, residence halls, and non-academic support services; such supplies to include freight, parcel post, resale stock, UPS, departmentally- owned materials from storage, and courier service deliveries of perishables, air freight, live animals, and contract courier packages as assigned.
- Assist in the receipt, unpacking, storage, sorting and delivery of materials shipped to the university.
- Load and transport furniture and equipment between department locations, to and from the university’s Furniture Repair Shop; to other assigned locations on or off campus, including the surplus furniture pool, both at the university and in Chicago or Springfield, IL.
- Load and unload the surplus trailers.
- Move equipment and furnishings within and between buildings due to office relocations and/or renovations.
- Provide transport of materials and equipment for special events, including the hauling of chairs and tables.
- Deliver and collect mail on designated campus mail delivery routes.
- Pick up from and deliver mail to the DeKalb Post Office on a daily basis as assigned.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid/current driver’s license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicle(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
- One (1) year (12 months) of work experience driving a delivery vehicle

- This position involves heavy lifting, pushing and pulling of loaded carts weighing at least 75lbs.
- Working outside in all types of temperature extremes and weather conditions.
- The ability to stoop, lift, and twist holding a minimum of 75 lb. dead weight is a necessary element of the position.
- The ability to correctly and safely operate vehicles with manual transmissions, power takeoffs, and hydraulically operated tail gates is essential to the successful completion of the required duties of the position.
