Digital Accessibility Specialist

 

Summary:

 

Provides supervision and direct support in the creation of alternative formats for use by students, faculty, and staff.

 

Duties:

 

Operations: 

 

  1. Develops and implements policies and procedures relating to alternative format production. Converts digital and hardcopy materials into alternative formats. Assures production quality and on-time delivery of alternative formats. Maintains detailed records of alternate media activities and transactions in Miami’s case management system. Facilitates the captioning and transcription of audio, video, and other multimedia content. Hires, trains, and supervises student employees. Works under pressure with frequent deadlines, making thoughtful decisions with speed and accuracy. 

Training:

 

  1. Develops and implements training on alternative formats for faculty, staff, and students.  Provides assistive technology training and support to the Miller Center for Student Disability Services, the Rinella Learning Center, and Human Resources; as well as for students, faculty, and staff who use assistive technology.

Additional:

 

  1. Actively promote a customer-oriented approach throughout IT Services. Participates in professional development activities. May occasionally teach one credit-bearing course, per semester, on an as-needed basis and with division approval. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree earned by date of hire. 

OR

 

  • Associate’s degree earned by date of hire, plus 2 years of relevant experience.

 

This position is available to persons who are currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time and indefinite basis. (Persons authorized to work on such a basis include US citizens, lawful permanent residents (“green card” holders), asylees, refugees, and temporary residents under IRCA.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Master’s Degree Advanced knowledge and experience in creating accessible documents. Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning. Experience using an electronic case management system. Strong communication, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving skills. Knowledge and experience with computer and assistive technologies; disability practices and procedures. Knowledge of disability law, including but not limited to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504). Knowledge and experience with website design, including basic knowledge of HTML and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate information with attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work independently, in a team, and with or without direction.  Customer service skills; including diplomatically, patiently, and successfully handling complaints, problems, questions, conflicts, and suggestions. Accessibility certifications through organizations such as IAAP (International Association of Accessibility Professionals).
