Bioinformatics Pipeline Computational Scientist

Job Summary:

The UW-Madison Department of Bacteriology ( https://bact.wisc.edu ) seeks to hire a Research Cyberinfrastructure Specialist to support expanding computational microbiology research in our department. The research enterprise in the Department of Bacteriology encompasses premier research laboratories and facilities with missions to explore fundamental and complex questions in microbiology, microbial ecology, and virology. The Research Cyberinfrastructure Specialist will advance the development and use of high-performance shared computing systems supporting diverse computational research in the Department of Bacteriology. This Research Cyberinfrastructure Specialist position reports to Dr. Karthik Anantharaman, and works closely with the faculty, staff, and members of the Department of Bacteriology.

Responsibilities: Applies computational, computer science, data science, and cyber infrastructure (CI) research and development principles to provide advanced and varied consultation on research and technology integration and development. Provides non-routine maintenance, planning, and advanced troubleshooting to ensure CI resources meet research needs. Provides guidance and training to other staff and serves as subject matter expert for internal stakeholders.
  • 25% Serves as a CI domain expert, provides direct support of users, other staff providing support of users, and advanced computing systems
  • 25% Provides expertise and experience in CI to lead troubleshooting, analysis, operation, and support of advanced computing systems and for research
  • 35% Develops unique and custom Cyber Infrastructure solutions for research needs
  • 10% Writes and updates documentation and tutorials supporting CI activities for research. May provide brief courses for internal researchers and external collaborators
  • 5% Provides consultation and expertise for research proposals. May act as technical lead for cyber infrastructure projects. May serve as Co-Principal Investigator for a proposal
Tasks:
  • Work with faculty, students and other researchers to understand their research needs and assist in experimental design and development of highly complex research methodologies that use high-throughput computing/bioinformatics.
  • Works with supervisor to set time committed to different research groups, maintains a record of the individuals who have been helped and the training or research outcomes
  • Analysis, operation, and troubleshooting of computational bioinformatics research
  • Promote and advocate the use of shared campus computational resources (such as CHTC) amongst researchers.
  • Provide assistance in interfacing with shared campus computational resources and enable training of researchers.
  • Assist researchers in integrating shared campus computational resources into their extramural grant applications.
  • Conduct assessments of continuous improvement. Continue to look for areas of improvement, research then develop processes, and then document/communication/train on those new processes.

Education:

Required
Master's Degree
Advanced degree in the biological sciences with a demonstrated track-record of bioinformatics/computational biology research (evidenced, for example, through peer-reviewed publications)

Qualifications:

- Advanced degree preferred in the biological sciences with a demonstrated track-record of bioinformatics/computational biology research
- Bioinformatics experience in a broad array of areas, such as sequence analysis, protein analysis, metabolomics, etc.
- Familiarity with Unix-based systems and demonstrated ability to code in at least one language (e.g. Perl, Python, etc).
- Must be able to work constructively in a group setting

Additional skills desired for the position:
- Evidence of multi-disciplinary research collaboration across different fields of biology
- Experience with high-throughput computing
- Strong organization skills, evidence of independence, attention to detail, and ability to interact and manage a wide diversity of projects and researchers (faculty, students, technicians, etc).
