Overview

The Graphics and User Experience Designer (temporary hourly position) provides important support to a range of communications products that raise the profile of Princeton Engineering and its constituent units. Reporting to the manager of web design and development, the designer provides support to the web team in the ongoing refinement and quality assurance of the main website for the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and in the development of sites in collaboration with departments, centers, and start-up initiatives within the school. The person also supports news and content team within the school by creating graphics for news and social media. Responsibilities also may include providing graphic design for communications-related initiatives with the school such as the work of the Diversity and Inclusion team.

The work will evolve to support the school’s rapid growth. In addition to developing the engineering core site in an agile way and maintaining its quality, the work will support centers and institutes, especially new and rebranding ones such as Bioengineering, DeCenter (blockchain), and the Keller Center's design initiatives. Examples of recent and upcoming start-up initiatives supported by graphic design include NextG (wireless technologies), DeCenter, Robotics, and Quantum Engineering. The work also allows better integration and support of the growing number of communications specialists at departments and centers. These unit-specific communicators lead website redesigns and other special projects, and are most productive when they leverage different skill sets within the dean's staff, such as graphic design.

The work requires close attention to detail, experience and fluidity with using a range of digital design tools, strong organizational skills for handling multiple projects. Available to work 22 hours per week during normal business hours or 3 equivalent work days.



Responsibilities

Graphic Design, such as:
- Mood boards
- Design system components
- Branding identity concepts
- Posters
- Powerpoint presentations
- Photo editing
- Illustrations for news stories, podcasts, and external newsletters
- Research of design concepts for promotional materials
- Support for departmental initiatives such as hallway posters and brochures, including liaison with or supplement to external designers

User Experience Design
- wireframe creation
- high fidelity comps
- design system component creation
- QA of wireframes and web application features
- prototyping of web applications
- application of accessibility standards to design
- research of best practices of UX
- analyzation of existing content and the application of best UX practices

Content Administration
- Wordpress CMS content entry
- MailChimp newsletter administration
- QA of web content

Social Media Support
- video reel animation creation
- tv screen poster creation
- social media post creation for various sizes and platforms
- video editing via After Effects, Premiere or DaVinchi Resolve
- Instagram story graphics, including to promote D&I events
- holiday graphics for social media
- helping optimize our social media to reach younger audiences via original graphics (as opposed to pre-packaged templates)



Qualifications

Required qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of prior work experience

- High level of computer competency and excellent verbal and writing skills
- Organized, willing to assist with any project, able to balance multiple projects at any given time and be self-motivated
- Take initiative in problem solving and not afraid to ask questions
- Knowledge in the following applications: Figma, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign
- General knowledge of WordPress and Drupal
- Ability to meet deadlines while working on team projects
- Attention to aesthetics and visual detail
- Excellent communication skills
- Incorporate feedback and take/give direction well

Preferred qualifications:

- Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS
- General web accessibility knowledge
- General front-end development knowledge
- Basic video-editing knowledge
