Position Summary:
The Department of Biology in Willamette University's College of Arts & Sciences welcomes applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor (full-time, non-tenure-track) to begin in August 2023. PhD required by start of the fall term; Postdoctoral experience welcome, but not required. This position is renewable, based on curricular need and successful reviews.
We are seeking a biologist who is building a career as a scholar and a teacher. Candidates with expertise in any area of biology are encouraged to apply. We seek candidates who could teach undergraduate courses in one or more of the following areas: Physiology, Evolution and Ecology, Molecular Cellular Biology, Computational Biology, and/or Bioinformatics . The successful applicant will be strongly committed to growing an excellent program integrating teaching, research, and mentoring at the undergraduate level, and will be expected to teach 6 course units a year (1.0 unit/lecture, 0.5 unit/lab). The teaching assignments will potentially include an introductory major/non-majors biology course, a lower-division biology), a course in the Biology Major's Core, and upper-division course(s) in the candidate's area of expertise (including a research intensive course). Course sizes range from 12 to 48 students. Our curriculum is research-centered and would benefit from a candidate who wishes to establish a research program collaborating with undergraduate students; the Biology Department has shared equipment and space in our core facilities, along with some limited funds to support this work.

About the Biology Department: Our faculty members view themselves as teacher-scholars; teaching in our department is inspired by Vision and Change (NSF, AAC&U, 2011) and learning through research training is deeply embedded in the curriculum at all levels. This approach enables us to engage in best pedagogical practices and better serve our increasingly diverse and excellent community of students. 60% of our graduates enter careers in science and technology. The Department is committed to mentoring and career development for junior faculty.

About the University and College: Willamette is a small, highly selective private university of 2500 students, 1300 of whom are enrolled in the undergraduate College of Arts & Sciences, which is committed to providing students with a well-rounded liberal arts education. Willamette believes that a diverse, inclusive community is essential to achieving academic excellence; accordingly, we seek candidates who not only have the potential to become outstanding teachers and scholars, but whose work also furthers equity and inclusion, and who will bring to campus varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds. The College of Arts & Sciences is proud to enroll a substantial number of low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students of color. Over the past four years, 24% of our students were first-generation; 24% were Pell-eligible; and 33% identified as African American, Hispanic/LatinX, Native American/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or multiracial.

Candidates for this position must be able to reside in or primarily work in Oregon by the first day of employment. This is an in-person teaching position. All University positions require that candidates submit to a criminal conviction record check prior to hire. Conviction does not automatically preclude candidates from being hired. Nature of conviction will be considered relative to the duties of the position.

To apply, please upload the following documents as part of your application materials in the “My Experience” section labeled “Resume”:
  • Cover letter describing your interest in the position and how this position fits with your career aspirations and goals
  • CV
  • A statement of teaching philosophy that includes your anticipated or current practices
  • A research statement that includes your major research question, theoretical framework, and anticipated plans for how to adapt the program to support undergraduate research and learning
  • A diversity statement describing your understanding of the challenges we face in academia, and your experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and in diverse communities
  • Copies of your undergraduate and graduate transcripts (these may be unofficial)

Separately, please arrange for three letters of reference from people who can speak to your promise and/or experience as a teacher-scholar, collaborative community member, and mentor to be sent to Department Chair Melissa Marks, at memarks@willamette.edu. Any questions may also be directed to Dr. Marks.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
