We are seeking aSr. Instructional Technologist. The Sr. Instructional Technologist supports the mission of the Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation (CTEI) to partner with faculty to extend their instructional impact by connecting innovative pedagogical strategies and emerging instructional technologies. The Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation is an instructional innovation center supporting faculty and graduate students on the Homewood campus. The Sr. Instructional Technologist will be the primary person responsible for leading the strategic use of educational technology in undergraduate programs, with a specific focus on the local learning management system (LMS).

The Sr. Instructional Technologist will continuously evaluate emerging learning management solutions in collaboration with other JHU instructional technology staff, redesign training materials, and lead transitional efforts, should the University decide to change its learning management platform in the future.




The Sr. Instructional Technologist will work primarily on the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University, but occasional travel to conduct training at Johns Hopkins satellite campuses in the Baltimore and Washington, DC, metro area may be required. To accommodate the scheduling needs of some faculty, a limited amount of training may take place during non-standard business hours (evenings and weekends).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities



  • Designing, developing, and facilitating various modes of LMS training (face-to-face, online, and hybrid) and teaching technologies that integrate with the LMS.
  • Monitoring progress for participants in training sessions.
  • Conducting formative and summative evaluations of the training programs and modifying the programs as needed.
  • Researching and evaluating technologies that complement the LMS and support faculty’s instructional goals (e.g., Turnitin, Panopto). Consulting with and recommending unique solutions to address faculty’s instructional goals.
  • Providing project management for instructional innovation projects funded by internal grants (e.g., Technology Fellowships).
  • Providing one-on-one consultations to faculty in-person and via email, phone, and web-based conferencing on the LMS and related instructional technologies.
  • Strategizing with academic departments how the learning management system can support curricular programming.
  • Designing and developing new training materials and revising existing support materials including tutorials, technical documentation, and Johns Hopkins’ LMS user support website.
  • Ensuring that training materials reflect the most recent version of the LMS used at Johns Hopkins.
  • Participating on project teams that develop new educational resources to be used with the LMS.
  • Representing CTEI on university committees related to LMS and training initiatives (e.g., Canvas user group, Instructional Technology Advisory Group).
  • Leading transitional efforts for academic divisions when adopting new instructional applications that integrate with the learning management system.
  • Troubleshooting LMS problems with instructors and IT@JH staff. Working closely with IT@JH to thoroughly test and identify bugs when updates to LMS are applied.
  • Disseminating best practices in teaching via CTEI publications such as the blog, Innovative Instructor articles, website, etc.
  • Presenting LMS user-support best practices at professional conferences.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities



  • Knowledge of Canvas or other learning management systems.
  • Project management experience.
  • Enthusiasm for, and experience in, independent, “self-starter” work environment.
  • Working knowledge of online pedagogy, best practices, and adult learning principles.
  • At least one year of experience developing courses or training with online learning management tools.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, including presentation software applications.
  • Understanding of basic user interface (UI) design principles.
  • Competence with the email, social media, threaded discussion groups, blogs, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic HTML.
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire, synthesize, and share expert professional knowledge.
  • Knowledge of faculty development principles.
  • Knowledge of distributed education models and philosophies.
  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation principles and practices.
  • Understanding of Section 508 accessibility standards.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in any field (HIGHLY desirable).
  • College teaching experience in any discipline.

Starting Salary Range: $54,080-$74,390-$94,710 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
