REPORTS TO: Chairperson, Natural Sciences

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Prepares reagents, solutions, chemicals, equipment, computer software, and other materials required for laboratory sessions.
  2. Assists and discusses with faculty members the scientific and technical aspects of experiments offered in laboratory sections of physics and earth science courses administered by the department.
  3. Coordinates the purchasing of equipment, chemicals, reagents, and educational materials. Maintains inventory control of these items using the appropriate computer software. Acts as a vendor liaison and ensures that all materials meet appropriate specifications before they are purchased.
  4. Maintains, adjusts and repairs mechanical, optical, electrical, and thermal equipment.
  5. Maintains up-to-date and complete paperwork on all departmental purchase orders. Uses appropriate computer software to record, file, and ensure that all orders are properly documented and placed.
  6. Assists the chairperson in the development and preparation of supply and capital equipment budgets (bids) using the departmental database inventory system and other appropriate computer software.
  7. Checks new equipment and supplies with bid specifications for compliance, performance and acceptability and organizes materials/equipment in the workspace.
  8. Assists the chairperson in selection of work study students, student technicians and student teaching assistants and schedules, supervises and evaluates their various work assignments. Also provides assistance to faculty in supervising students during scheduled and make-up laboratories or to students working on special projects.
  9. Instructs faculty on proper, safe, and accepted use of existing and new equipment according to the current OSHA and State safety regulations.
  10. Ensures that all laboratory procedures are up-to-date, evaluates computer software as assigned by the chairperson and assists in planning laboratory and experiment simulations using the appropriate software on departmental computers.
  11. Maintains proper housekeeping throughout all teaching laboratories, preparation areas and the computer laboratory.
  12. Serves as a member of the department and divisional safety committees.
  13. Ensures the proper management of the department's laboratories in accordance with current State and Federal regulations, working with College hygiene and safety officers. Implements departmental compliance with N.J. Right-to-Know Regulations.
  14. Assists the chairperson in planning and scheduling of laboratory sessions. Maintains textbook and laboratory manual inventory.
  15. Assists the chairperson in the orientation of new adjunct faculty and in the coordination of all adjunct faculty and staff.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate Degree in a Physical Science or equivalent
  • Three years of laboratory experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science in a Physical Science or equivalent
  • Experience with computers and software application
  • Familiarity with modern analytical instrumentation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Some laboratory management experience
