Position Title
TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science Instructor
The Opportunity

TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Program Instructors operate in support of the TRIO UBMS Summer Program (6 week program) on the Colorado School of Mines campus. We have seven part-time Program Instructor positions available for the June 2023 program. Program Instructors create high school level curriculum and delivery classroom instruction in one of the following disciplines Math, Science, English, Foreign Language and STEM elective.

UBMS is a FREE program for 9th – 12th grade students at Alameda International Jr/Sr High School interested in pursuing a college degree in math or science. We focus on first-generation, low-income students who are U.S. citizens needing extra support in pursuit of their STEM academic goals. Summer Program Instructors will be teaching up to 60 UBMS participants from Alameda International Junior/Senior High School (9th-12th graders). This program will prepare Alameda students to become successful college students via academic support, professional development, enrichment opportunities, and college application guidance.

Responsibilities
  • Creating and teaching a class to 20-30 high school students, ensuing 4-12 hours per week of class contact time.
  • Curriculum Development – 8 hours of curriculum development
  • Planning for classes- 1-2 hours planning per week
  • Deliver at least one of these classes:
    • 9th/10th grade math – MWF
    • 11th/12th grade math – MWF
    • 9th/10th grade English - MW
    • 11th/12th grade English - MW
    • Earth science or biology (including lab time) - TRF
    • Chemistry or physics (including lab time) - TRF
    • Foreign language - TR
    • STEM electives (hands-on, engaging, lab-based) - M-F
  • Available to teach June 5-June 30, 2023

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience working with disadvantaged youth / individuals
  • Ability to effectively work with students, counselors, and college administrators
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Sensitivity to challenges faced by students from low-income, first-generation, minority and diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Masters degree
  • Experience with TRIO programs
  • CO teaching license
Certifications and Licenses:
  • Preference for STEM majors
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Previous tutoring experience
  • Bilingual – Spanish and English

Pay Range

$30.19/hour as dictated by the grant

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
