FULL-TIME VISITING ARTIST IN PHOTOGRAPHY

The Department of Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a Full-Time Visiting Artist beginning August 2023.

PROGRAM PROFILE

The Department of Photography offers over 60 courses yearly with approximately 600 enrollments and 16-20 dedicated MFA students. It embraces a diverse philosophy towards the discipline. We seek energetic and visionary practitioners actively engaged in extending the multiple traditions and emerging practices in the expanded field of contemporary photography. Students use a broad range of media and methods, emphasizing individual practice, research, and historical precedents. The Department prepares students to become independent, self-directed artists, scholars, and citizens. The department establishes a learning environment that values respectful questioning and creative subversion, facilitating the process by which our students become active participants in transforming material and intellectual culture. The School’s interdisciplinary openness challenges students to take responsibility for their learning within and across traditional disciplines. Models of civic and social engagement set examples for students’ guided construction of themselves as global citizens in a world of intensifying diversity. RESPONSIBILITIES

Full-Time Visiting Artists in the Department of Photography teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. Candidates should possess expertise in analog and digital processes, be capable of teaching introductory to graduate-level courses across the curriculum and design a theme-based course based on their artistic practice and research.

QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred qualifications for the position include holding an MFA or equivalent terminal degree and having at least one year of experience teaching at the college level. Candidates should also have an active studio practice and a comprehensive knowledge of photographic history. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an interest in engaging with new and emerging themes in photography and possess a broad understanding of contemporary approaches to the field. Additionally, we seek energetic and visionary practitioners actively engaged in extending traditional and emerging practices and bringing diverse perspectives and ways of thinking in the expanded field of contemporary photography.  The successful candidate should also be able to effectively teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students from various backgrounds. Applicants must be authorized to work legally in the United States.

Applicants who have taught at SAIC within the past five years are ineligible.
