Job Summary

The Presidents Leadership Class (PLC) is one of the University of Colorado Boulder's strongest undergraduate programs with emphases on high academic achievement, leadership development and ethical citizenship for students from any academic major. We encourage applications for our Director role! The Director provides responsible leadership for all aspects of the PLC program, including working closely with the students and staff, and cultivating relationships with the PLC Board of Advocates, the local communities, and the state of Colorado (plus appropriate organizations, institutions and foundations). The Director reports to the Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Support and Enrichment of the Office of Undergraduate Education.
The position requires the diligence and capability to work some occasional evenings and weekends. A large share of the value of this position comes from the opportunity to directly work with wonderful students, staff and many supporting individuals.

Who We Are

The Presidents Leadership Class (PLC) is a nationally renowned program that has guided the leadership development of Colorado’s most dedicated undergraduate students for more than four decades. PLC works in partnership with other units and departments at the university to recruit and educate top students in a rigorous four-year, community-based, academic and experiential leadership program.
PLC is a leading model of a four-year comprehensive, multidisciplinary, undergraduate leadership development learning community focusing on ethical reasoning, critical thinking, global perspectives and inclusiveness. PLC’s approach to leadership development is supported by the program’s four pillars: class, community, experience, and scholarship, with each pillar being intentionally woven throughout the student experience. PLC develops extraordinary leaders who apply their unique approach to leadership throughout their lives, in their academic fields, professions, and communities in Colorado and beyond. The program entails significant effort by students and staff both inside and outside of the classroom via such modes of learning as specialty classes, internships, community engagement, guest lectures, international opportunities, experiential learning, and volunteerism. The program also provides financial scholarships plus individualized advising and mentoring.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Responsible for all academic, co-curricular, financial, administrative, personnel, and operational functions of the PLC program, conforming to university policies in order to ensure and enhance the program’s standards, relevancy, value to the students, the university, and the state.
  • Manage a budget consisting of myriad sources: university salaries and operating funds of approximately $400K; university merit scholarship funds of $100K; gift fund of approximately $80K; donor scholarships in excess of $70K.
  • Lead program development including cultivating student opportunities for community engagement, experiential learning, and career applications, coordinate alignment of the multi-year course curriculum, and manage data collection and program evaluation.
  • Collaborate actively with the PLC Board of Advocates, the CU Foundation and Development offices, students, PLC alumni, community leaders, businesses, institutions of several types, other campus leadership programs, and leaders for all sectors.

Student Development:
  • Create an innovative and ambitious curriculum that provides students with hands-on, practical experiences that promote their personal and leadership growth while serving the community.
  • Mentor PLC students through individual and cohort meetings, community events, orientations, student staff, etc.

Teaching:
  • Partner with the PLC faculty to design professional development trainings and course alignment, while also developing new program components that draw on multiple leadership models and apply theory into practice.
  • Teach at least one Presidents Leadership Class course per semester.
  • Teach one Leadership course per academic year (optional).

Internal Management:
  • Manage and supervise the PLC professional staff including the Assistant Director and the Program Coordinator.
  • Manage and supervise the PLC faculty including the Teaching Associate Professor and one to two adjunct lecturers.
  • Assess and improve the academic and co-curricular programming for relevance, efficacy, DEI, student success, retention, engagement, and difficulty.
  • Collaborate with other CU programs, departments, centers, and efforts as appropriate.
  • Serve on the Center for Leadership executive committee.
  • Mentor student staff in the Director and Chief of Staff roles.

Fundraising and Development:
  • Work with CU’s Development office to achieve short-term, current use gift fund, and long-term endowment, current fundraising campaigns, and other fund raising goals.
  • Discover and cultivate relationships resulting in increased scholarship opportunities.
  • Seek out and apply for grants to help fund program offerings.
  • Work with external partners for the enrichment of the student experience.
  • In conjunction with the Chair of the PLC Board of Advisors, serve as the primary point of contact and organizer for quarterly board meetings and recurring electronic updates.
What You Should Know
  • This position’s anticipated schedule is Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm with occasional evenings and weekends required.
What We Can Offer
  • The salary range for this position is $82,800 - $105,000 per year.

What We Require
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • 4 years of relevant experience, including substantial managerial and supervisory experience.
  • Practical and proven experience developing leaders and teams in the workplace and/or experience teaching in the higher-ed environment.
  • Experience and proven track record in business development or donor development.

  • Proficiency in common office and administrative software.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion concepts; skills and ability to incorporate DEI into leadership studies.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Master's or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education or equivalent years of experience.
  • Evidence of experience with leadership studies, development, practice.
  • Past experience with service learning and experiential education.
  • Familiarity with the Presidents Leadership Class program.
