Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder department of Strategic Relations & Communication encourages applications for a Media Relations Manager position! Working in a fast-paced, technology- and deadline-driven environment, this supervisory position oversees media training for faculty experts, news video, media distribution and monitoring platforms, media analytics and the CU Boulder broadcast studio. Supervising 2.5 staff members and at least one student worker, and coordinating with team leads, the media relations manager supports the day-to-day flow of news response and multimedia news packaging, and participates on integrated marketing and communication teams with the primary goal of attracting positive attention from the media and key constituents in Colorado, nationwide and internationally for outstanding research, faculty expertise, student accomplishments, university programs and outreach. The media relations manager serves as primary campus contact on news related to business and law and news video strategy.

Who We Are

Strategic Relations and Communications facilitates an integrated approach to campus wide marketing and communications to inspire greater CU Boulder engagement, affinity and support.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Follow breaking news trends, pitches stories to the media, and provide direction to multimedia news producer and media relations associate on quick turnaround media tactics, including news releases, tip sheets and multimedia assets; and respond timely to media requests for CU Boulder experts, particularly in business and law.
  • Oversee CU Boulder broadcast studio, partnership with the Associated Press (Campus Insights) and media training for faculty experts, and develop and update processes, standards and marketing strategy for all; assists news stations by coordinating and conducting remote interviews; pitch stories to national TV bookers; and ensures media team members are trained on studio and Campus Insights procedures.
  • Lead coordination of on-campus media events, including but not limited to commencement, move-in and major conferences. Plan media availabilities around events, coordinate with campus and media partners, organize day-of needs and staffs events.
  • Supervise media distribution and monitoring platforms to ensure they are optimized. Strategize regular tracking and reporting.
  • Process and manage on-campus media film requests in coordination with campus legal and marketing teams including Athletics, colleges and campus departments; staff film crews on campus when appropriate; develop film policy updates when needed and promote campus as a film destination for media coverage.
  • Stay up-to-date on emergency communications procedures and serve as a member of the emergency communications response team.
  • Determine new/expanded media targets based on Strategic Relations and Communications goals and improves tracking methods for interactions with media.
  • Identify national trends, both with respect to areas of news coverage as well as tactics and tools used for effective dissemination, to advance CU Boulder's place in the media and improve Strategic Media Relations practices.
  • Run proactive news operations, including weekly news meeting, when the news and editorial director is unavailable.
  • Identify experts who can be made available to media, particularly in response to breaking news.
  • Explore, identify and implement new techniques to develop rapport with reporters and leverage experts during current events and breaking news.
  • Distinguish matters that can be independently handled vs. those that need to be advanced to the News & Editorial Director and the Associate Vice Chancellor of Strategic Communications or Vice Chancellor of Strategic Relations and Communications.
  • Identify content of strategic value – especially pieces demonstrating the strategic campus imperatives of becoming the top innovation university, shaping tomorrow’s leaders and positively impacting humanity.
  • Coordinate with marketing and social media teams to create communications plans for major news or notable campus events.
What We Can Offer
  • The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000 annually.

What We Require
  • Bachelor's Degree in journalism, public relations, English or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in public relations, media relations, communications or related field.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
What You Will Need
  • Expert knowledge of AP style, and familiarity with social media and multimedia applications.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • 3-5 years of media relations experience.
  • Working knowledge of video editing systems, camera and audio equipment and codecs.
  • Familiarity with broadcast news workflow and news cycle.
  • Hands-on knowledge of social media and multimedia applications (websites, audio/podcasting and video).
  • Familiarity with web platform software such as Drupul, Adobe, and Microsoft.
  • Pro (or similar); media monitoring and analytics platforms; Excel.
  • Experience with oversight of a content team or platform in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Higher education communications experience.
