Job Summary

The Integrated Teaching and Learning Program (ITLP) welcomes applications for our IT Director . The director leads all IT-related responsibilities and efforts for the ITLP and for multiple other education-focused spaces and programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS). They provide strategic leadership, staff supervision and operations management for both software engineering and system administration. The director’s responsibilities include: partner and customer relationships, software development lifecycle management, classroom technology and support, system integrations, application management, server administration, security management, desktop support, and oversight of the CEAS Cloud Computing solution. They are expected to cultivate a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the IT team and across the ITLP.

The director determines how the ITLP can best meet its strategic and operational goals through the acquisition and deployment of technology resources. They create, implement, and ensure compliance with IT policies and procedures in accordance with CU system and campus requirements. They are responsible for the development, implementation, and support of all software, hardware, and data systems and applications used by the ITLP to support the myriad needs of the organization. The director collaborates with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) as well as other groups on the Boulder campus and University Information Systems (UIS).

This position reports directly to the ITLP Director and is a member of the ITLP’s senior leadership team to collaboratively determine the ongoing needs and strategic direction of technology and educational initiatives in the ITLP and CEAS.

Who We Are

The Integrated Teaching and Learning (ITL) Program at the University of Colorado Boulder is a nationally recognized engineering education leader. Our mission is to provide curriculum and support for hands-on engineering education, across all engineering disciplines, for students from kindergarten to graduate school (K-22), with a focus on students from underserved populations and communities. We operate the 35,000 square-foot Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory on the Boulder campus, where we support hands-on experiences for over 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students each year. We also lead and manage TeachEngineering.org and the Denver-Metro Engineering Consortium (DMEC). TeachEngineering.org is a NSF-funded digital library that provides free, hands-on K-12 STEM curriculum to over 2.5M educators annually. The DMEC is a DoD-funded partnership between CU Boulder, CU Denver, and five community colleges in the Denver-Metro area to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups earning associate degrees and transferring to undergraduate engineering programs.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Relationship Management and Service Support Delivery:
  • Create and operationalize the overall relationship and support-management strategy for the ITLP and its ~25 professional staff and 50+ student employees who support 60,000+ engagement touchpoints with 3,500+ unique students and 130+ courses each year. Similarly, sets strategy for the hands-on education spaces in the Idea Forge, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Integrated Design Engineering, and, in the near future, Electrical Engineering and Williams Village.
  • Develop and implement a strategy for supporting the specialized IT needs of faculty and students enrolled in courses that span 10+ departments or programs.
  • Confer with other teams within the ITLP and supported units in CEAS to understand business requirements and leverage this feedback to inform both strategic and day-to-day delivery of services in the most efficient, forward-thinking and accountable way.
  • Build relationships with other programs, departments, and colleges at CU Boulder in addition to external schools, vendors, business units, and other academic support organizations to understand priorities, capabilities, and resources as they apply to engineering environments.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality, customer-focused services that are in alignment with standards in process, design, architecture, and operations and that enable the ITLP to meet its strategic goals and priorities. In partnership with the system-administration and software-engineering technical team leads, translates user requests and finds creative solutions to technical challenges
College and Campus IT Partnerships:
  • Facilitate open and collaborative discussions with CEAS leadership and the Office of Information Technology about CEAS and campus IT plans.
  • Work with college and campus partners to identify and, where possible, eliminate systemic barriers to enable the ITLP and other CEAS units to leverage various centrally provided IT solutions.
  • Serve as a member of various college- or campus-wide technology committees, specifically those related to the campus’ teaching and learning mission.
Staff Leadership and Supervision:
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluates a multi-disciplinary IT team of system administrators and software engineers, consisting of 4-7 professionals (direct) and numerous student employees (indirect).
  • Ensure processes, procedures, and an environment of innovation and support are in place for each staff position such that performance goals are met in a timely manner, project tasks are completed, independent initiative and creativity is celebrated, and cross training is in place to ensure redundancy in overall support services.
  • Foster a culture of diversity, inclusion, and equity among the IT team and across the ITLP.
Department Operations:
  • Set and implement the overall IT strategy of the ITLP and its support of over 3,500 students each year across 25+ different engineering and non-engineering majors. Also sets and implements the IT vision for the other six CEAS units (which also serve thousands of students annually) in the IT team’s support portfolio.
  • Be responsible for the ITLP’s IT operations in its support of day-to-day delivery and continual improvement of IT services including partner and customer relationships, software development lifecycle management, classroom technology and support, system integrations, application management, server administration, security management, desktop support, and oversight of the CEAS Cloud Computing solution.
  • Define and deliver strategies for departmental planning, resource allocation, staff utilization, policy making, technology infrastructure, SDLC, and the adoption of technology.
  • Collaborate with ITLP project leaders to identify and meet all IT needs for central initiatives, such as TeachEngineering.org and the Denver-Metro Engineering Consortium.
  • Manage all aspects of IT service agreements with external vendors, OIT, and other units in the college. This includes the service agreements for the hands-on education spaces in the Idea Forge, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Integrated Design Engineering, and, in the near future, Electrical Engineering and Williams Village. This includes managing the ITLP’s audio/visual equipment and service partnership with campus’s central A/V team.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with UIS, campus OIT, ITLP and CEAS faculty, staff, and vendors on technical architecture design and IT policy, including security.
  • Manage crisis situations that may involve complex technical hardware or software problems occurring after hours, on weekends, or during holidays.
  • Proactively learns new skills and systems to enhance ITLP operations and to serve as a technical consultant and advisor on complicated problems.
Applications, Web, and Data Services:
  • Responsible for the overall vision and executions of the ITLP’s digital ecosystem, including its website, custom applications, data collection and reporting systems, and documentation (Confluence) and file-storage systems.
  • Set the vision and strategy for data-collection, integration, storage, and reporting systems for the ITLP and its 60,000+ engagement touchpoints with students each year (workshop participation, computer logins, use of 3D printers/laser cutters/manufacturing center/electronic center, etc.). Similarly sets the data and reporting strategies for the other CEAS units in the IT team’s portfolio.
  • Ensure all systems meet campus secure computing standards.
  • Champion and oversee a wide range of custom and third-party software applications and data systems within the ITLP and supported units.
  • Supervise the administration (maintenance, architecture, and backups) of web and database servers (both hardware and virtual servers).
  • Create and approve IT best practices and procedures for ensuring platform and operational stability of engineering-focused applications and curricula.
  • In collaboration with the ITLP’s software developers, evaluates all user requests for custom applications, reporting, and other requests that fall outside the scope of normal releases.
  • Oversee all technical aspects—including the design, structure, and implementation—of the ITLP website, TeachEngineering.org, and other web applications.
What You Should Know What We Can Offer
  • Starting salary range is $116,000 - $135,000.

  • Graduation from college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
  • At least four years of senior-level experience managing technology resources in an IT environment.

What We Would Like You to Have
  • Eight or more years of professional experience in information technology, preferably in higher education, in an academic environment, and/or in an engineering environment.
  • Desirable to have some of the following:
    • Software engineering experience.
    • Systems administration experience.
