Chief Objective of Position
To lead a championship-caliber program that develops students in academic and athletic pursuits while recruiting and training athletes that embrace the holistic development provided at Christopher Newport.
Work Tasks
1. Provides leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student athletes at Christopher Newport University.
2. Directs and provides the planning, organizing and coaching of EITHER the Christopher Newport University Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Distance student-athletes OR track & field student-athletes consistent with a championship Track & Field/Cross Country program.
3. Collects and analyzes tactical and statistical data of opponent teams; designs training plans and strategies; analyzes performance of team members and adjust strategies as needed. Establishes meet schedules in conjunction with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country.
4. Counsels team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters; consults with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, University administration and faculty for resolution of problems as required.
5. Manages financial aspects of the Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country program OR the track & field program in consultation with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, including budget development, strategic planning, and fundraising.
6. Utilizes independent judgment and renders decisions on a daily basis regarding Men’s and Women’s Cross Country OR the track & field program to ensure daily operations of the programs run smoothly.
7. Develops and implements operational guidelines and procedures per area of expertise consistent with those established for the entire Track & Field/Cross Country program, the Department of Athletics, and the University.
8. In coordination with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, screens and evaluates athletic qualifications of prospective recruits; coordinates with University Undergraduate Admissions Office to establish academic eligibility and arranges meetings between prospects and the University. Coordinates campus tours for visiting prospects. Assists with new student orientation activities.
9. Compiles and analyzes performance statistics for Christopher Newport University Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Distance athletes OR the track & field athletes.
10. Plans the off-season physical training program in accordance with NCAA regulations.
11. Studies, evaluates and implements innovations in distance running strategy and equipment. Coordinates purchases of Cross Country and/or track-related equipment with the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country.
12. Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the NCAA. Responsible for safety rules and regulations regarding use of equipment to reduce liability and to ensure NCAA compliance.
13. Represents the Christopher Newport University Athletic Department in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events. Participates in professional associations.
14. Performs public relations and marketing activities to promote the athletic program; performs community relations activities.
15. Works a variety of schedules and hours consistent with the needs of the position.
16. Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and relations within the office and with all constituencies including students, faculty, staff, administrators, other employees, other agency personnel and community members. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service. Completes all work in a timely, efficient and accurate manner.
17. Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence.
18. This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.
19. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. - Knowledge of National Collegiate Athletics Association rules and regulations. Skilled in training or instructing student athletes; excellent interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions; travel and work non-traditional hours; manage people and projects. Ability to foster positive internal and external public relations. Computer skills. Ability to learn and apply conferences rules and regulations.

Required Education
A Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree and experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.

Experience Required
- Coaching experience at the collegiate level. Experience with National Collegiate Athletics Association rules and regulations. Experience in team management to include assistant coaches and others.
Experience Preferred
- Experience as as a head coach at the collegiate level. Experience in recruiting successful student athletes consistent with NCAA guidelines. Experience in fostering positive internal and external public relations. Experience in recognizing, supporting and referring student athletes for needed academic and personal support.
