Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,010 - $4,600 per month

Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,010 - $7,254 per month
  • This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the incumbent supports the department's mission by providing various specialized and general technical support functions. Specific duties include repair, diagnosis, and maintenance of electronic instrumentation, including instrumental software, computer-related problems, and electronic components of major analytical instrumentation and electro-mechanical equipment; design, modification, and production of electronic equipment and electrical-mechanical apparatuses for instructional and research use; operational and instructional support of departmental computer-based and other instrumentation; troubleshooting of new instrumentation; and performing other related duties as assigned. In addition, the Technician is expected to facilitate and maintain professional relationships with outside organizations.

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide lab equipment maintenance and repair for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Science and Mathematics. In addition, the Equipment Technician II, Electronic, will provide maintenance, repairs, and user support to faculty and staff within the department/college.

Key Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the materials, tools and equipment utilized.
  • An understanding of chemical analytical techniques and their implementation using electronic instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of digital computers and their adaptation to instrumental measurements.
  • Safety practices, procedures, rules, and precautions associated with equipment and working conditions.
  • Ability to:
    • Coordinate different technical and instructional tasks, determine the relative importance of each, set appropriate deadlines, and complete all projects accordingly.
    • Apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative in performing instructional/technical work.
    • Learn software for chemical inventories, hazard assessments, and inspections.
    • Ability to perform complex troubleshooting and design, fabricate, and modify technical equipment.
    • Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both writing and verbally, to perform the duties of the position.
    • Ability to make arithmetic computations where required.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent to graduation from a four-year college/university.
  • Or Equivalent to two years of experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment. Related experience in chemistry or biochemistry equipment as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  • Or Equivalent to a trade school or technical arts training in biological sciences equipment, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of the military specialization in chemistry and biochemistry equipment maintenance and repair.
    • Preferred Skills:
      • Experience working in an academic institution, research laboratory, medical facility, or other complex manufacturing, industrial, or commercial organization.
      • Experience providing IT support as related to electro-mechanical lab and research equipment.
      • Experience providing customer service/user support.
      • Help to manage the research facilities at RIMI and the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Facility in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry under the direct supervision of the Department Chair. Responsibilities include the maintenance and servicing (or coordination of servicing) of the current instruments at RIMI, three NMR spectrometers, and any other new instruments commissioned.
      • Handling and magnet transfer of liquid helium and liquid nitrogen and transporting total liquid nitrogen (600 pounds tanks) multiple days weekly to fill the three magnets.
      • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
      • Current compressed gas handling training.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers four rigorous, high quality degree programs (B.A. Chemistry, B.S. Chemistry, B.S. Biochemistry and M.S. Chemistry) that prepare students for careers in research, industry and education, as well as preparing students for admission to Ph.D., medical, pharmacy, dentistry and osteopathic medicine programs.
