The Sergeant position reports to the Police Lieutenant and will perform primary responding officer duties as well as supervise the staff and operations on assigned shifts. In addition, this position will serve as the department's liaison in the absence of a higher-ranked officer, and will complete special tasks as assigned. This is an important role that requires excellent judgment, good problem-solving skills, and an ability to collaborate and engage with a diverse population.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Provide supervision for shift operations, including directing, prioritizing, and reviewing the work activities of all those working on the shift.
  • Complete payroll and oversee scheduling for assigned staff.
  • Assist the Shift Lieutenant with policy review and implementation.
  • Provide proactive assistance to the Shift Lieutenant while providing leadership and supervision to sworn and civilian members of the shift, ensuring compliance with department orders and state laws.
  • Respond to incidents and emergencies as they arise and patrol the campus grounds, acting as a deterrent to crime.
  • Serve as an initial point of contact to report any violation of community standards or Massachusetts General Laws.
  • Conduct shift change roll calls.
  • Serve as liaison with other public services agencies and the court system.
  • Collaborate as necessary with other college constituents regarding public safety issues.
  • Serve as Clery Compliance Officer, reviewing all reports, gathering crime statistics from other agencies, and compiling and publishing reports.
  • Meet with the Title IX department and the Office of Community Standards to review incidents reported to those offices, but not the college Police Department.
  • Maintain all records and files.
  • Perform necessary administrative and data entry tasks.
  • Complete special assignments as requested.
  • Provide guidance and training to other staff.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS - Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform job.
  • Associate Degree in Criminal Justice required
  • 3-5 years of previous law enforcement experience required. Experience in a higher education setting preferred
  • Law Enforcement Academy training required
  • POST certification, Massachusetts Special State Police Warrant\License, and Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms Class A required
  • CPR\AED certification and MPTC First Responder Certification required
  • Completion of the Roger Williams First-Line Supervisors Course required
  • Must undergo a background check and a psychological examination
  • Good attention to detail required
  • Valid driver's license required

  • This position is active in nature, continuous movement throughout the area is required.
  • Ability to have continuous oral and written communication with students, members of the public, co-workers, and supervisors is essential.
  • Repetitive movements, frequent lifting of up to 100 pounds, reaching, pushing, stooping, climbing, and the ability to detect color-coding and read will be expected.

COMPENSATION

Starting salary for this position will be between $33.02- $40.45 hourly, commensurate with experience.

Employees are also eligible for subsidized parking at the Boston Common Garage.
