Director of Partnerships and Development

About the Opportunity

Northeastern University is seeking a Development Director who will play a vital role in supporting key activities of the Engineering PLUS Alliance. A five-year NSF INCLUDES (Inclusion Across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science) Program awarded to Northeastern University, the Engineering PLUS Alliance is one of 17 national initiatives working collaboratively to enhance U.S. leadership with the major focus on diversity, inclusion and broadening participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Engineering PLUS Alliance aims to produce 130K undergraduate and graduate engineering degrees awarded annually to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous People of Color) and women students through systemic, transformative, and sustainable change in engineering education.

Reporting to the co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) and working closely with the PI (Principal Investigator), Program Manager and other Alliance leaders, the Development Director will lead and oversee stewardship of the Engineering PLUS Alliance's bedrock relationships - the Strategic Advisory Board and the regional Industrial Advisory Boards. The Director will oversee all national and regional fundraising for the Engineering PLUS Alliance. The Director will develop and manage strategies to improve and expand partner relationships in ways that produce greater investment for the Engineering PLUS Alliance and its program portfolio. The Director should analyze each partner's funding priorities and the extent to which the Alliance is fully leveraging investment opportunities. The Director will conduct regular strategic outreach to his/her/their peers at partner organizations; actively seek prospects for new investment and support on-going efforts of Northeastern's Advancement team to retain partners and produce new revenue.

To achieve these objectives, the Development Director will interact with key partners, including the College of Engineering's Development Office, Engineering PLUS Alliance Collaborators, Northeastern's Office of the Provost, and the Dean's office of NU's College of Engineering.

About the Engineering PLUS Alliance

Engineering PLUS is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a part of the NSF INCLUDES Program. NSF INCLUDES is a national initiative that enhances U.S. leadership with the major focus on diversity, inclusion and broadening participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Engineering PLUS aims to build a system and a network to increase engineering degrees among women and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Other People of Color) nationally.

Our Hypothesis, Vision and Mission: Because of the wealth of best practices on broadening participation in engineering that have emerged from research over the past several decades, we put forth this hypothesis: Contemporary efforts to broaden participation in engineering fail to consistently leverage evidence-based, high impact practices and redress obstacles necessary to catalyze institutional change at scale. A collective alliance of networked communities is needed to build an inclusive infrastructure that will drive and sustain the systemic change needed to markedly increase the diversity of engineering students enrolled and graduating across the country.

Engineering PLUS is designed to build this critical infrastructure through well-crafted partnerships. For example, the NSF Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program and the network of BIPOC and women engineering society chapters have the potential of making a lasting impact at scale. Moreover, Northeastern University (NU) has over 30 years of experience implementing programs focused on broadening participation in engineering.

Our vision for the Engineering PLUS Alliance is to achieve transformative, systemic and sustainable change that will increase the growth rate in the number of BIPOC and women obtaining undergraduate and graduate engineering degrees. By driving the growth of engineering undergraduate degrees by 10% and graduate degrees by 5% across these underrepresented populations, we aim to increase the annual number of degrees awarded these populations to 100,000/30,000 (BS/MS-PhD) and establish a future growth rate that can substantially close the aforementioned gaps. Our mission is to implement the strategy posed by our hypothesis, with emphasis on fostering systems changes at key transition points of educational pathways.
