About the Opportunity

Summary and Responsibilities:

Northeastern University's The Roux Institute located in Portland, ME, invites applications for a Research Scientist position in the fields of Data Visualization and Visual Analytics. As an individual contributor to the visualization research mission, the Research Scientist will be responsible for developing an independent research portfolio with meaningful engagement of partner organizations. Expected start date is flexible but should not be before July 1, 2022.

We seek applicants with expertise in one or more of the following data visualization areas: spatial data, scientific computing, simulation, modeling, visual parameter space analysis, systems and rendering, and AI. This position will focus on Engineering application areas such as material modeling, mechanics, advanced manufacturing, energy, and construction. These efforts will be coordinated under the Data Visualization Research vertical at the Roux Institute. The successful candidate will be named as an “Institute Member” at the Roux Institute.

Research Scientists will contribute to a portfolio of highly matrixed collaborations on the Institute campus in Portland ME and beyond and will have an opportunity to build their own research projects. Collaborators will include faculty and professional research staff at The Roux Institute, faculty across the Northeastern network, and industry researchers who may be co-located at the Institute or located at their own company. The Northeastern University research network includes a collection of highly innovative university institutes, including the Institute for Experiential Artificial Intelligence, the Institute for Experiential Robotics, the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things, and the Network Science Institute.

Research & Development 80% - Develop an independent research portfolio centered around some aspect of data visualization. Build strong collaborations with interdisciplinary colleagues and industry, nonprofit, or government partners and actively engage these individuals in the research.

Obtain Research Funding 20% - Write and/or contribute to research proposals and develop budgets and other technical project related materials.

Qualifications
  • PhD or other terminal degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Design, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated track record of scholarly achievement in relevant areas of Data Visualization or Visual Analytics, with a commensurate publication history.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary research teams and build long-term relationships with research partners.
  • Excellent communication skills across diverse audiences and settings. Ability to work in a fast-paced and innovative setting. Adaptability.
  • Strong prototyping skills.

  • Experience working in an industry research setting.
