    Department Summary

The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health at the University of Oregon Portland establishes a new national model for behavioral healthcare for children and families by creating the nation's first undergraduate program in child behavioral health.

The institute prioritizes the needs of youth who have been historically or persistently underserved and seeks to make real system change by:
  • Creating a new mental health profession
  • Delivering support in schools and the community
  • Training existing youth-serving professionals
  • Developing new approaches to support child behavioral health
  • Transforming the Pacific Northwest into a national model of thought and action

This groundbreaking institute was made possible by an extraordinary gift from Connie and Steve Ballmer, co-founders of Ballmer Group Philanthropy.

    Position Summary (updated)

The Director of Program Evaluation for the Ballmer Institute/Research Associate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and analyzing all program evaluation and research activities related to the Child Behavioral Health Training Program (CBH-TP) under the direction of the incoming Executive Director, Dr. Katie McLaughlin.

The CBH-TP establishes a new national model for behavioral health care for children and families by creating the nation's first undergraduate program in child behavioral health. This program will provide undergraduates with applied training in the delivery of interventions to promote well-being and prevent mental health problems from developing and worsening in children and adolescents. Graduates of the program will leave with practical skills that will allow them to directly enter the behavioral health workforce as child behavioral health specialists (CBHS) to support the well-being of youth in schools, the health care system, and other community settings.

All elements of the CBH-TP will need to be evaluated and researched for their effectiveness, acceptability, and impact across a variety of outcomes. Program evaluation will focus on both implementation outcomes and behavioral health outcomes for youth and schools that receive services from CBHS students. The program evaluation will be used to inform the specific intervention techniques students will be trained to administer; the model for clinical decision-making; competency assessments; the clinical supervision model; the integration of CBHS students into existing systems; and the digital tools needed to support training and service delivery.

The position is eligible for remote work. Local and statewide travel is required up to 20%. May start at less than 1.0 FTE with the expectation of becoming 1.0 FTE one year into employment or sooner.
