Job Description:


Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.

The Trades Technician will perform a variety of duties to repair and maintain the buildings operation system. Requires the ability to make routine and emergency repairs to equipment such as indoor and outdoor light fixtures, emergency, and exit lights, outlets, switches, air handlers, chiller, cooling towers, plumbing fixtures etc. Assist with development of preventive maintenance plans, diagnosing problems and effecting repairs to minimize down times.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • General Maintenance and Repair: Perform general maintenance and repairs to facilities to include various structural components such as windows, doors, floors, ceilings, office equipment, ceiling tiles, moving furniture, carpentry, etc.
  • HVAC Maintenance and Repair: To include adjusting or replacing belts, pulleys, dampers, pumps, and filters. Lubricate and clean motors, check safety devices, etc. Work with contractors to maintain equipment.
  • Electrical Maintenance and Repair: Perform maintenance and repairs to the electrical system to include new and old construction, outlets, switch, light bulbs, ballast, breakers, testing circuits, tracing wiring, and replacing fixtures. Work with contractors to maintain equipment.
  • Plumbing Maintenance: Maintain the plumbing system to include but not limited to making repairs to pipes, fixtures, valves, faucets, commodes, sinks, and internal and external water and sewer system.
  • Grounds Maintenance: When necessary assist in grounds maintenance, to include mowing, trash removal, landscaping, mulching, etc.
  • General Duties: Perform other duties as required by the supervisor. Assist with snow removal. Receiving and distribution of operational supplies, to include janitorial and office supplies.

KSA's/Required Qualifications:
  • High school graduate
  • Substantial experience in building maintenance
  • Valid Virginia Drivers License
  • Ability to lift/move/carry 50 pounds
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in building maintenance
  • Vocational training or coursework in building trades
  • Knowledge to troubleshoot problems in different building trades
