The Department of Otolaryngology is seeking to hire aResearch Assistantto work on Safe Direct Current Stimulator (SDCS). A new and exciting neuro-engineering technology that we are developing in our laboratory to enable creation of a new class of implantable devices that can reversibly block pain in the peripheral nerves. The candidate will be taught by a doctoral graduate student to conduct anesthetized as well as behavioral chinchilla and rat experiments. Ultimately transition to conducting experiments with no supervision. The research assistant will be working on mechanical and electrical design of the Freeform Stimulator -- neural implant being developed.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Experimental techniques include rodent handling, setting up and recording cortical neural firing in response to external stimulation and stimulation delivered electrically through the FS system or standard implantable pulse stimulator.
  • Assemble and organize experimental data and conduct fundamental data analysis.
  • Experience with working with rodents and experience with conducting electrophysiology and behavioral experiments.
  • The candidate will be taught by a doctoral graduate student to conduct anesthetized as well as behavioral chinchilla and rat experiments and ultimately transition to conducting them with no supervision.
  • The experimental techniques include rodent handling, setting up and recording cortical neural firing in response to external stimulation and stimulation delivered electrically through the FS system or standard implantable pulse stimulator.
  • The candidate will be expected to assemble and organize experimental data and conduct fundamental data analysis.
  • Responsible for collecting, interpreting and analyzing experimental data.
  • Assist the PIs in study protocol submission, patient recruitment, and consent.
  • Literature review, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation as well as oversight and monitoring of data collection/study protocols.
  • Analyzes project data.
  • Assists with writing manuscripts for publication.
  • Assists with preparation of data for reports and presentations.
  • Assist with development of grants, progress reports and study protocols.
  • Coordinates daily preparation of charts for participant visits.
  • Conducts study monitoring visits with existing participants.
  • Completes study source documents.
  • Collects and enters data from various sources for study protocols.
  • Designs and implements procedural adjustments to increase accuracy and efficiency of data collection and entry process.
  • May be involved in some basic data analysis.
  • Performs quality checks on all lab processing, paper forms and data entry.
  • Conducts periodic audits under the direction of the PI.
  • Maintains files in an organized manner.
  • Assists with office coordination, answers phone, complies medical research records.
  • Assists in special event planning, staff in-service and certifications.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering or Neuroscience discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Neuroscience laboratory electrophysiology research experience, good understanding of electrophysiology experimental setup.
