Summary
This recruitment is for one full-time, tenure track Counselor for Athletics/General commencing in July 2023. The primary assignment involves providing a wide range of educational, career, and personal counseling to current and prospective college student athletes and the general student population. This position will provide leadership in counseling-related activities pertaining to student athletes at GWC including ensuring athletic eligibility and developing comprehensive academic plans utilizing DegreeWorks and other campus technologies that align with the student athlete's goals and values. The assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; tracking and reporting of data for student equity outcomes, collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.
The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, and hours outside of the regular semester during Summer and Winter terms as needed for athletic recruitment. Assignment hours and days are subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Golden West College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting teaching and academic excellence and student learning and success through the work of Counseling.?
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide comprehensive educational, career, and personal
counseling to current and prospective student athletes and the
general student population.
- Assist students in making decisions relative to career choice,
major selection, and educational planning, including appropriate
assessment, vocational counseling, and transfer to a four-year
college/university.
- Maintain understanding and proficiency utilizing athletic
eligibility requirements - The National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA), and California Community College Athletic
Association (CCCAA)- combined with transfer requirements for
in-state, out-of-state, public and private colleges and
universities to assist students to set goals and develop
comprehensive student education plans.
- Provide general education planning orientation, program
advisement and follow-up counseling for new student athletes in
individual and group settings, referrals for the student athlete
services.
- Provide case management activities to student athletes to
ensure that all student-athletes meet the matriculation
requirements for priority registration.
- Ensure that all Student-Athletes have initial SEP for 3C2A
eligibility for participation in their first semester, and
comprehensive SEP's for participation in their second semester and
beyond.
- Develop effective working relationships with faculty members in
other instructional disciplines and perform liaison activities as
required. Serve as a consultant to faculty and coaches regarding
student athlete performance and retention.
- Assist in the preparation of counseling related publications
and in the presentation of workshops on issues related to student
athletes.
- Maintain accurate records and MIS coding for reporting
purposes.
- Coordinate and communicate with parents, coaches, and
compliance/eligibility officers as necessary within The Family
Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)
guidelines.
- Administer and interpret a variety of assessment instruments,
to both groups and individuals.
- Participate, as appropriate, in the college's outreach program
with local high schools and the community.
- Provide instruction in Counseling in accordance with
established course outlines.
- Participate in the development and revision of Counseling
curriculum.
- Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and
evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student
performance.
- Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter
areas.
- Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and
ethics.
- Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time
faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach
all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board
Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate
records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit
student grades according to established deadlines; post and
maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental
meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and
committees, and ongoing professional development as
assigned.
- Assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online
sections in addition to hours outside the regular semester, during
summer and winter terms to meet student athlete unique
needs.
- Participate in professional growth activities on and off
campus.
Qualifications and Physical Demands
Minimum Qualifications:
Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (3) and show demonstrated evidence of D.E.I. (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) :
- Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR;
- Possess a bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees above and hold a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), OR
- Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit/upload an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials.

Desirable Qualifications
- Two years of recent experience counseling and teaching at the
post-secondary level preferably working with student
athletes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of community college curricula and the
higher education system.
- Evidence of understanding of and commitment to maintaining
knowledge of National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA),
National Association of Independent Athletics (NAIA), and
California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA)
Eligibility and Transfer Requirements.
- Evidence of ability to understand, analyze and apply
multi-layered regulations (Title IX, NCAA, NAIA, and the CCCAA)
along with understanding of other issues and requirements unique to
students who participate in college athletics.
- Demonstrated knowledge of matriculation requirements with
competencies in general academic counseling, educational planning,
career and personal counseling.
- Knowledge of degree and transfer requirements for completion
including AA/AS, ADT, and transfer admission criteria for
general/non-recruited student athletes.
- Experience in blending student success strategies such as: goal
setting, time-management, problem solving, study methods, and
research skills into counseling sessions and curriculum.
- Evidence of a strong commitment to professional growth and
development, and to the continued innovation and improvement of
successful counseling and teaching.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and
effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including
students, faculty, coaches, administrators and staff) as well as
off-campus community and education partners.
- Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in a
post-secondary setting.
- Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a
diverse student population.
- Evidence of an ability to effectively engage with and
facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds,
cultures, and experiences.
- Evidence of an ability to adapt teaching pedagogy to the
knowledge level and personality of each individual, group, and
class.
- Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an

PAY PHILOSOPHY:
For a full-time, tenure-track Counselor position a maximum starting range of $68,149 to $116,190 is offered, based on the 2022-2023 salary schedule of $68,149 to $162,480 . In addition, an annual stipend of $3,568 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
