Position Summary:

The Department of Facilities Management is a large operational service organization that provides a broad array of services to the campus community through the following offices: Access Control Services, Automotive Services, Building Services, Energy and Central Utilities, Facilities Operations, Grounds and Landscape Maintenance Services, Mailing and Receiving Services, and Environmental Health and Safety. This position resides within the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.

Main Responsibilities:
  • The Laboratory Safety Manager is responsible for: coordinating, developing and ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety programs within and around the laboratory setting
  • Managing environmental, health, and safety programs, which include but are not limited to: OSHA Laboratory Standard, Chemical Hygiene, regulated medical waste and hazardous waste management and emergency response (campus wide), HMIS inventory management, Right To Know/Hazard Communication, GHS Compliance, fire safety, Personal Protective Equipment, and machine guarding
  • Serving in roles necessary for lab compliance, which include but are not limited to: Chemical Hygiene Officer, Radiation Safety Officer, Biosafety Officer, Laser Safety Officer, an ex-officio member of IACUC, an ex-officio member of IRB, and the Chair of the Laboratory Safety Committee
  • Developing positive working relationships with laboratory personnel and associated departments to ensure that program interests are communicated and that compliance needs are understood
  • Developing, creating, and conducting employee training for assigned programs
  • Performing audits/evaluations/inspections for compliance and education purposes.
Required Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, environmental science, or a related science discipline or equivalent as determined by the appointing authority.
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in a laboratory related position.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in good standing issued from the state of residence is required.
  • Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute experience on a year for year basis. Master's degree may be substituted for one (1) year of required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preferred to include the direct application of scientific principles to educational or community settings for laboratory safety.
  • Prefer a Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer, a requirement is the ability to become a Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer.
