General Statement of Job

The Custodial Supervisor supervises and coordinates activities of staff custodians in the performance of routine and project cleaning, event support, equipment and furniture moves and other duties in support of campus activities. This position provides expertise in cleaning chemicals as well as equipment and procedures in building operations for the Physical Plant and the University community.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

Organizes, trains, leads, schedules and supervises custodial staff to carry out the required tasks with a high level of efficiency and customer service.

Evaluates available materials in order to standardize and achieve quality results in the most economical manner.

Develops, documents and distributes routine descriptions for every custodial position.

Develops, documents and distributes standardized cleaning procedures and frequencies for both routine work and specialized tasks done on a periodic basis.

Develops an “Employee Orientation” program to familiarize all new employees with the department, campus, safety, products, procedures and equipment.

Conducts monthly meetings with staff to communicate news, changes and addition in service training.

Submits purchase requisitions in accordance with standard procedures to ensure availability of sufficient supplies and materials as required.

Determines required inventory levels and monitor stock of custodial supplies in Central Stores.

Approves and submits time sheets for custodial personnel.

Develops cost estimates as needed to support facility requests for campus projects.

Assists in the facilities review process by performing annual inspections and providing information for the facilities inventory system.

Formulates plans and specifications to be used in preparation of bids for acquiring services, contracts and items to be purchased.

When necessary in the absence of an employee, ensures that all areas on campus have coverage by either assigning the rovers to cover or by moving other staff around as necessary. In the event no one else is available, he/she could be required to do the following:

  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance functions in assigned area using departmental techniques and standards.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms daily, including floors, fixtures, mirrors, doors, etc.
  • Cleans, vacuums, sweeps, dust-mops, wet-mops hallways, stairways, lounges, classrooms, computer rooms, labs, storage areas, entrances, entrance glass, offices, athletic surfaces and/or firing range according to MSSC custodial standards.
  • Strips, scrubs, applies floor finish, buffs, and burnishes, refinishes hard surface floors, and extract carpets according to MSSC custodial standards.
  • Re-lamps fluorescent and incandescent light fixtures and make minor repairs (tighten screws, lubricate doors, etc.).

Oversees interviewing, recommending hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Monitors attendance and disciplines as necessary for excessive unscheduled absences and apparent abuse of sick leave.

Approves vacation requests ensuring that there are sufficient staff available to cover all areas required.

Is available after hours for dealing with custodial emergencies as required.

Oversees and implements the campus recycling program.

Performs other related duties as required.

Education, Experience, and Licenses

Associate’s degree required for this position.

Three years experience in institutional cleaning, carpet and hard surface floor care; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous supervisory experience, preferably in an institutional custodial services environment is preferred.

Valid Driver’s License and ability to meet the University’s insurance requirements for driving University vehicles.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to individuals and groups.
  • Requires the ability to be accountable for inventory/property management.
  • Requires the ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
  • Requires the ability to use computers for data entry.
  • Requires the ability to use computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes.
  • Requires the ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms including the use of a computer keyboard; stand; work on his or her feet for several hours at a time; and bend, stoop, climb ladder/stairs. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 70 lbs. The employee must occasionally work overhead, using a ladder; and talk or hear including the use of a telephone and 2 way radio. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color perception, peripheral vision, depth perception, texture perception, and ability to adjust focus. Requires the ability to smell.

Typically the employee works indoors, in classroom, business office and athletic facility environments with a moderate noise level. Occasionally the employee will be required to work outside the buildings, even in inclement weather.
