Position Purpose
The Registrar manages the storage, maintenance, care, and loan of all works in the collection and on loan to the Hood Museum of Art, manages the work of the registration department, and serves as the principal liaison from the registration department with curators, administrators, and the exhibitions team.

- Master’s degree in museum studies, art history, anthropology, or related field or equivalent experience.
- Five years of registration experience.
- Three years of management experience.
- Knowledge of art handling best practices and art and artifact collections care.
- Knowledge of exhibitions organization and management.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of up-to-date policies and standards on collections care and management.
- Demonstrated experience in assessing art object storage and conservation issues.
- Ability to work under multiple deadlines.
- Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
- Seven years of experience as a registrar or collections manager in an art museum.
- Five years of management experience.
- Experience in estimating and managing budgets.

Key Accountabilities
Description
Registration, Art Handling, and Storage – Holds primary responsibility for secure and proper storage of the collection. Works with all staff who handle art on proper storage, and works with director, deputy director and security/building manager on issues related to the facility, including security, climate, and pest control. Coordinates and schedules conservation work with curators and various conservators/conservation labs, tracks and maintains conservation records and budgets. Coordinates the rolling inventory and processing of objects, including storage location, numbering, photography, condition reports when required, and creation of object files. Completes audit reports, insurance reports and acts as chief liaison to Dartmouth’s office of risk management and insurance carrier. Is responsible for supervising arrangements for all outgoing and incoming loans. Serves as a courier for collections loans and assigns courier duties to other staff members

Acquisitions and Deaccessions – Manages the acquisition and deaccessioning processes with Curator of Collections. Schedules acquisitions committee meetings and supports the committee with required materials. Acts as the chief liaison to Dartmouth’s Office of Advancement.

Administration - Serves as primary liaison from registration department on exhibitions, including shipping, insurance, packing, crating, condition reports, courier arrangements, and preparation of loan forms. Manages registration department staff and resources, including its budget, which encompasses collections maintenance and estimates related to object travel for exhibitions and acquisitions. Works with Curator of Collection to ensure that collections policies are up to date.
