The Lake Rescue and Safety Supervisor is eligible to receive $0.80 per hour for weekend and night differential pay (Night: Monday - Friday 6:00 pm - 6:00 am. Weekend: Friday 6:00 pm - Monday 6:00 am).

Job Summary:

This position assists in the oversight of the lake safety and rescue program and consults with other departments and agencies on water safety programs at the UW-Madison campus and outlying properties. This position is responsible for overseeing day to day recreational activities of University students, staff, and the general public involving aquatic activities on Lake Mendota. Employees in this position are responsible for ensuring recreational safety by detecting and correcting unsafe boating, swimming, and other lake related practices and providing rescue assistance. This position also identifies and responds to emergency and imminent hazard situations, complaints, and requests for service. Operates rescue launch, as driver or crew member, on routine patrols and assistance runs.

With guidance from the Specialty Services Lieutenant responsible for Lake Safety and Rescue, sets, adjusts, and modifies Temporary Employee/Lifesaving Station Operators schedules for efficiency. Exercises personal judgement and discretion utilizing personal knowledge, skills, abilities based on training and experience in best practices, national standards, and state law in identifying policy, law or safety violations, and explaining and negotiating appropriate remediation methods to faculty, staff, students, and other users of Lake Mendota.

Employees work closely with campus organizations developing and implementing safety policies and are responsible for providing advisory services related to safety of existing and forecasted lake weather conditions. Individuals in this position will be involved in educational efforts to promote safe recreational practices through workshops, media communications, facility tours, and other presentations. This is a highly responsible position in public safety, requiring advanced decision-making skills and excellent skills and knowledge in aquatic safety.

Responsibilities: Assists in the development and maintenance of safety programs focusing on lake safety. Provides consultation to department staff, functions as a liaison to other critical partners and lake users.
  • 10% Functions as a subject matter expert in the areas of U.S. Coast Guard best practices and all other relevant safety laws and guidelines and agencies accredited for training and operation of rescue watercraft
  • 10% Monitors daily weather conditions and determines relative safety of lakes for the community and general public
  • 10% Identifies potentially hazardous weather and notifies all lake users of imminent threats
  • 10% Assists and educates other staff on performing relevant duties
  • 10% Sets, adjusts, and modifies staff and student lifeguard schedules for efficiency
  • 10% Provides supervision, leadership, and assistance in managing the Lake Safety and Rescue Program including rescue watercraft and lifeguard services
  • 10% Develops short and long term solutions related to complex lake safety issues impacting environmental health and safety issues and addresses regulatory areas impacted by lake safety and other lake users
  • 10% Coordinates maintenance for rescue launches, buildings, piers, and rescue equipment
  • 15% Responds to emergencies and/or assists with requests for service from adjacent agencies. Conducts routine patrol operations when needed
  • 5% Required to work special events and assignments as identified by the Division.

Education:

Qualifications:

Prior boating experience required. Applicant must have at least one year of work experience in the professional operation of government or commercial vessels. Candidate must be willing to learn the required boating skills to perform the job. Experience and comfort being on the water is necessary.

CPR/AED certification and/or First-Aid skills preferred, but not required. Employer will provide necessary training.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Boaters Safety Course preferred, but not required. Employer will provide necessary training.

National Incident Management System IS Courses 100, 200, & 700 will be required within the first 6 months of employment.

Persons in this position must obtain or possess a valid Wisconsin Driver's License with a minimum of 2 years driving experience within the United States and/or Canada required.

License/Certification:

Preferred
Boater Safety Certification
Must be able to obtain the certification if not currently certified.

Preferred
Instructor Certificate for Watercraft Operations
Must be able to obtain the certification if not currently certified.

Ideal certifications or licenses would include: maritime licenses or certifications, lifesaving, lifeguard, or water rescue certifications, basic boat safety or operation certifications, and any formal training certificates for incident command system.

Work Schedule:

This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. The schedule is determined by Department needs and policy. The schedule rotates based on a pre-determined schedule and includes working holidays and weekends. Work beyond or outside hours scheduled may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned.

Examples may include incident reports, employee evaluations, daily activity logs, training plans, outlines, agendas, or administrative documents such as requests for purchase, incident action plans, operational orders, or after action reviews.
