Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Media Relations & Academic Marketing, the Associate Director is responsible for daily media relations activities of a high-volume department that supports campuses in Philadelphia and San Francisco. This role will collaborate with internal and external constituents to develop/implement appropriate media relations and communications strategies for gaining the highest level of visibility across the media landscape.

Job Description

Develop and execute media relations strategies for faculty, Sr. Administrators, and academic leaders. Work closely with top-tier media outlets, Wharton's 240+ world-renowned faculty, and Wharton/Penn staff. Identify, develop, write, and pitch media stories in support of our strategic priorities; write and proofread press releases, articles, blogs, newsletters, email blasts, etc. Serve as a media advisor to faculty, academic leaders, and senior leadership. Prepare and guide faculty and administrators in advance of domestic and international print, online, and broadcast interviews, including logistical and technical requirements as well as interview coaching.

Complete daily media monitoring of Wharton and our faculty using various media monitoring services. Prepare reports that showcase strategic media placements for dissemination to various internal and external stakeholders. Support the Wharton Business Daily radio show on SiriusXM by coordinating timely interviews with Wharton faculty and disseminating segments both internally and externally. Participate in the planning and execution of marquis Wharton Media Relations events including Seminars for Business Journalists programs, press briefings, and media training sessions. Support crisis communications efforts as needed; manage highly sensitive issues that affect the Wharton brand. Collaborate with external PR and social media consultants.

Job Responsibilities
  • Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Media Relations & Academic Marketing, serve as a member of Wharton's media relations team. Develop story pitches, talking points, and other materials in support of the Dean's priorities, faculty research, student initiatives, and current news trends supported by strong media outreach and measurement strategies. Build and maintain internal and external relationships with key faculty, staff, journalists, producers, and influencers. Serve as Media Relations representative in MarComm's Faculty Working Group, acting as point person for research centers, academic departments, and divisions. Identify new streams of research, interesting student stories, new courses, etc. Pitch ideas to top media and broadcasting outlets. Collaborate with external PR and social media consultants. Act as back-up for the Senior Associate Director when she is unavailable.
  • Complete daily media monitoring of Wharton and our faculty using various media monitoring services. Identify opportunities to amplify prominent media placements to internal and external audiences. Prepare reports that showcase strategic media placements for dissemination to various internal and external stakeholders. Oversee student worker(s) and serve as project leader for media measurement project; responsible for analysis of collected data and strategy development. Guide media measurement strategy to maintain industry best practices. Track reputational issues and topics that may fall outside of traditional media coverage and monitoring.
  • Serve as a media advisor to faculty, academic leaders, and senior leadership. Determine appropriate approach/develop custom media relations strategies with a goal of achieving the highest level of visibility for the School. Prepare/guide faculty & administrators in advance of domestic & international print, broadcast, and online interviews. Provide logistical, technical, and interview coaching guidance in advance of media interactions.
  • Support the Wharton Business Daily radio show on SiriusXM by coordinating timely interviews with Wharton faculty and disseminating segments both internally and externally.
  • Serve as a member of the Wharton Seminars for Business Journalists planning team. Assist with designing and executing media relations-led events such as faculty training workshops and press briefings. Support institutional events including MBA Convocation, graduation ceremonies, speaker series, etc.
  • Support crisis communication efforts as needed; manage highly sensitive issues that affect the Wharton brand. Partner with the Wharton School Dean's Office, Wharton Operations, and University Communications as appropriate.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
