Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a Cellar Master/Vineyard Manager position at the Walla Walla campus.

General Description:

This position will have primary responsibility for managing the 8 acre estate vineyards and has primary responsibility for the cellar operations of the Enology & Viticulture department. This person will work with and report to the Director of Enology & Viticulture to ensure that grape production is meeting quality and quantity standards and wines are being produced in a safe, compliant, and high-quality manner. This person will be responsible for vineyard management and cellar operations, and may assist with wine production courses. This person will also help with harvests.

Essential Functions:


  • Manage and maintain vineyard properties for the college with a focus on teaching students how to grow grapes of exceptional quality.
  • Manage the phytopathology program for the existing vineyards.
  • Design plans for fruit harvest, logistics, and transport of grapes including fruit from estate as well as non-estate vineyards.
  • Hire farm labor contractor in accordance with state and federal regulations to complete vineyard work, if necessary.
  • Collaborate with the wine industry on issues relevant to vineyard management and cellar operations.
  • Stay current with the latest scientific advances, techniques and technology in vineyard management and cellar operations.
  • Maintain vineyard equipment to ensure it meets industry standards.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the cellar.
  • Performs and oversees physical operations of the full range of winemaking tasks including processing, fermentation, racking, blending, bottling, and barrel maintenance.
  • Ensure that wines are produced in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Ensure cellar preparation and cleanliness, ensure equipment is properly serviced and ready for instructional use.
  • Ensure student compliance to safety regulations and oversee student and employee safety in winery and vineyard.
  • Support instructional process through assistance in classroom and lab setting.
  • Participate in department, division and college activities.
  • Maintain appropriate records for vineyard and winery compliance.
  • Maintain and operate within the given budget for vineyard and winery activities.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations appropriate for the position and industry.
  • Hire and oversee student and non-student employees as it pertains to management of the college vineyards and operations of the winery.

  • Qualifications:
    Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the college.

  • Associate's degree in Enology and Viticulture or Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 3 years of employment as a successful viticulturist/vineyard manager and cellar operations manager.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field (Agriculture, Agronomy, Management, Viticulture, Horticulture, Enology, etc.).
  • Teaching/training experience in a college or industry environment.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of and experience with alternative forms of viticulture such as sustainable and biodynamic agriculture.
  • Experience or demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring and/or engaging in services for students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Participation in professional development activities and interdisciplinary projects.


  • Conditions/Terms of Employment
    This is a full-time overtime eligible professional position. Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment. WWCC participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. Official college transcripts required at time of hire. Candidates may be subject to a criminal history background check as a condition of employment. Information from the background check may not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position. The college is a tobacco free institution.

    This position requires physically demanding labor to perform essential functions in the estate vineyards and operations of the winery. This position work schedule will typically be Monday through Friday 8-hours each day. During the summer, work schedule is Monday through Thursday 10-hours each day. Periodic travel may be required for industry collaboration and professional development.

    Compensation:

    Annual salary range: $60,000-65,000. The college has an excellent benefit program including paid sick leave; paid vacation leave; medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; retirement and two optional deferred compensation programs. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). All administrative exempt staff set aside 1% of their gross salary in a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) (VEBA). All exempt employees are required to participate in this program. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.
