Essential Functions

The University of Nebraska at Omaha seeks applicants for an Assistant or Associate Professor in our Emergency Management and Disaster Science ( EMDS ) Program, housed within the School of Public Administration. The starting date is negotiable but would prefer January 2024. A successful candidate for this position will possess a PhD in Emergency Management, Public Administration or Public Policy with emphasis in Emergency Management, or a related field. We are seeking applicants who can complement our EMDS faculty. Candidates seeking to fill the position should have interests and capacity to teach existing EMDS core courses, electives and help develop new courses for the Program. A willingness to teach introductory, upper level, and graduate courses in emergency management and offer courses in an on-line format is also required. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an ability conduct publishable research in emergency management . The position offers a teaching load of two courses per semester and a nine-month contract. Duties include teaching, research, school and program service, and community engagement.

Additional Duties

The UNO Emergency Management and Disaster Science Program is the largest undergraduate emergency management and fire services management program in the state and the only program that offers a Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management, minors in Emergency Management, Fire Services Management, Tribal Management and Emergency Services and an undergraduate certificate in Tribal Management and Emergency Services. Over the past decade, the Emergency Management and Disaster Science Program has proven to be one of the fastest expanding academic programs in the Nebraska University System. The program has three tenure track positions, two instructor lines, and two academic advisors/intern/outreach coordinators.

The School of Public Administration boasts a supportive and collaborative academic culture. It is home to one of the longest-accredited MPA programs in the country, enrolling over 200 graduate students, offering the program both online and on campus. The MPA program is ranked among the top 10-percent of all such programs in the 2022 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools, and is ranked #5 in Public Budgeting and Finance, #7 in local government management and #11 in Nonprofit Management. The School is also home to one of the few Ph.D. programs in Public Administration in the Great Plains region; faculty regularly have the opportunity to work with Ph.D. students.

Required Qualifications

A successful candidate for this position will possess a PhD in Emergency Management, Public Administration or Public Policy with emphasis in Emergency Management, or a related field.
