Job Description
This position's duties include various circulation and customer services duties such as processing of library materials, processing incoming and outgoing mail, assisting patrons at the services desk, and other duties associated with collection management. Additional duties will include assisting Technical Services staff with borrowing and lending of materials and other special projects as assigned. Work may include coordinating workflow within functional areas and overseeing the work of student assistants. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Circulation Tasks (75%):
  • Maintain a helpful visual presence at the service desk during scheduled hours to assist library patrons.
  • Determine patron eligibility for services; create library accounts, create and update patron records, resolve patron record problems.
  • Perform search operations to assist patrons in finding and requesting materials.
  • Direct patrons to the appropriate librarian for research and other assistance.
  • Exercise good judgement in the application and interpretation of policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Assist patrons with space scheduling and other needs as required.
  • Process fees and fines as appropriate.
  • Process the loan and return of materials.
  • Promptly report building and other issues to responsible parties.
  • Stacks management duties as assigned.
  • Know and apply the Library of Congress and other call numbering systems to properly shelve and retrieve items.
  • Preserve the integrity of collections by searching for missing items in a timely manner.
  • Recognize items in need of repair and direct items appropriately.
  • Work with appropriate supervisors to assist student employees when required.
  • Prepare, package, and send items via courier, mail, or other delivery systems.
  • Perform other miscellaneous circulation duties as assigned.
Interlibrary Loan (20%):
  • Complete ILL borrowing and lending requests as appropriate under the direction of the Interlibrary Loan Coordinator.
  • Scan materials for electronic delivery.
  • Oversee completion of lending requests by student assistants.
Other Duties (5%):
  • Library committee work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to meet and courteously provide library patrons with understandable interpretations of rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron information.
  • Ability to cooperate in a team environment.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer or computer terminal and perform basic clerical tasks.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.)
  • Ability to use Web browsers including Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, including faculty, students, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise mature independent judgment.
  • Effective organizational skills.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

  • Previous library experience
