Data Engineer

We are seeking aData Engineer. Positioned at the intersection of health services research, statistics, and data science, the Data Engineer will be responsible for the design, standards, and performance of data within the Johns Hopkins Critical Illness Precision Medicine Center of Excellence. The ideal applicant brings a love of, and skill at, rigorous problem-solving with large-scale, real-world data. Strong candidates may come from a wide range of training and backgrounds, including social science, epidemiology, health or service operations, or computer / data science. Aptitude and skill are more important than specific credentials in this rapidly changing field.

This position will work with leading experts in the field of critical care medicine to make seminal discoveries and translate those discoveries into changes in practice at both the bedside and system-level to improve the healing of patients and their loved ones. As the data lead of a diverse team involving social scientists, data scientists, clinicians, and trainees, the successful candidate will link real world data on trajectories of seriously ill patients through treatment in a diverse multi-hospital system to outcomes, using both causal inference and prediction.

The position involves collaboration with partners in the rapid and rigorous evaluation of ongoing program, organization, and delivery innovations (including both natural experiments and using individualized and cluster-randomized evaluations), development of grant proposals and building a culture of rigor, transparency, and reproducibility in data extraction, analysis, and interpretation. This role involves defining and designing data frames and products to precisely define patients’ physiology, treatment, and their evolution over multiple time scales, implementing, debugging, and maintaining them. Leading and supervising a growing team in their implementation and collaborating in diverse and energetic university research and cutting-edge clinical care environments.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • With a high level of autonomy, the Data Engineer designs and deploys large-scale data frames to support analytics and evaluation for a wide range of research, operational, and evaluation projects supporting the healing of critically ill patients, their loved ones, and the clinicians and institutions caring for them. This involves data management and integration of enterprise applications, research and other data sources in a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

  • Write and maintain code to extract individual and organizational data derived from a multi-hospital electronic health record and integrate it with other sources of data including environmental, governmental, and credit report data.
  • Investigate data sources to understand all aspects of data generation and updating, including data structures and sources, normal data values, and reasons for anomalies. Maintain documentation of data extraction processes to ensure standardization and retention of core meaning of data.
  • Understand requirements for data, information, reporting, and analytic needs to ensure alignment, maximize efficiency, and minimize duplicative effort with a number of overlapping projects and teams.
  • Develop, manage, and ensure ongoing implementation of standards for the Center of Excellence data model and data flows.
