Summary:  

Grand Valley State University Department of English seeks a visiting assistant professor, specializing in adolescent/young adult literacy. The position is for one year with the potential for renewal for up to three years. This position will be responsible for four courses per semester. This position will be responsible for teaching ENG 100: Reading for College Across the Majors, plus other courses as determined by department need (potential courses: ENG 310: Teaching Writing (Secondary) and ENG 311: Teaching Literature to Adolescents). We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations.

 

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • MA/MEd in Reading, Literacy, English Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.  Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.  Evidence of successful literacy teaching at the K-12 or college level.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:  

  • Ph.D. or ABD in English Education, Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction, Rhetoric/Composition, Urban Education, or other related field. Experience working with English Language Learners.

Responsibilities:   

  • Teaching up to 8 sections per year (4 sections per semester) of ENG 100: Reading for College Across the Majors Potentially teaching other English education courses, as needed Collaborate with English education faculty and other faculty/offices across the university, as needed

Department/College:  The English Department strengthens the liberal education of students by developing a deepened understanding of language and literacy, the value of critical reading and effective writing, and the richness of literature, past and present. To this end we will provide students in all emphasis areas with a coherent curricular framework and relevant, well-structured course choices. We will teach a variety of literary, analytical, pedagogical, and theoretical skills. We will teach students to speak, read, and write effectively. We will encourage students to think deeply and to reflect on what they have learned. We will encourage a love of learning and an appreciation for a liberal education with the intention of passing this love and appreciation on to their future students.
