MALCOLM X COLLEGE

Malcolm X College is seeking a Dean for the Health Science and Career Programs department. This position provides a vision for excellence in student learning by developing strong health career programs (i.e. Physician’s Assistant, Radiology Tech, Respiratory Tech, Surgical Tech, Nursing, Nephrology Tech, Paramedics /EMT, etc.) that focus on student success and innovative approaches that address the educational and technological demands of the 21st century.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Develops strategic plans and budgets, and coordinates supervision and evaluation of programs within the division of health career programs. Manages the department and its overall operations through direct supervision of key staff and provides necessary guidance of staff to ensure proper operation of programs.
  • Provides leadership for faculty and staff with a strong emphasis on faculty development, and keeping instruction, technology, curriculum, equipment, and standards of practice current such that the programs maintain high licensure/certification pass rates.
  • Develops new programs and expands existing programs, as appropriate for the district, in partnership with healthcare providers, regulatory and other agencies, and other segments of education. Keeps articulation agreements current.
  • Regularly evaluates part-time and full-time faculty and staff related to the program. Plans and conducts staff meetings and training activities for division staff to keep them informed and to improve program operations. Dean, Health Career Programs
  • Leads and supervises curriculum and program development and evaluation, and ensures program and institutional compliance with criteria for accreditation. Collects data and analyzes and interprets report information for outcomes assessment, program planning, and internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Monitors program assessment processes essential to the College in meeting its mission and maximizing the effectiveness of the teaching and learning environment. Provides guidance to health career programs regarding unit level assessment plans, processes, and unit level participation in institutional assessment activities and reporting.
  • Designs and manages a system for retrieving and storing data regarding student enrollment, program completion, program effectiveness, and the unit assessment process.
  • Manages multiple projects in a dynamic environment; works with campus offices on recruitment and retention initiatives; and in conjunction with program staff, develops collaborative relationships to establish advisory boards and clinical affiliations with business and educational institutions and community organizations.
  • Plans and supervises the scheduling of all Health Career Program courses and other activities for multiple phases each year.
  • Responsible for program budget preparations and accountability. Develops and monitors annual department budgets based on history of expenditures, predicted enrollment and revenue, and current allocations.
  • Manages state grants for career and technical education. Ensures that grant mandates are adhered to, ensures that reports are submitted in compliance with grantor requirements, and monitors the grant budgets to ensure no overspending.
  • Ensures that students have access to course and career advice and job placement opportunities.
  • Collaborates with the Office of Communications to prepare promotional brochures or informational packets for the various health career programs. Represents the College and its programs within the College service area to achieve visibility through planning and coordinating groups and committees.
  • Reviews and analyzes enrollment data, communicates results and plans Dean, Health Career Programs strategies for continued success. Prepares detailed written reports for administrative use. Uses computer software to prepare memoranda and spreadsheet reports detailing activities and statistics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of a health related Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution, Doctorate degree (i.e. PhD, EdD, DrPH, etc) in a Health Care discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of documented successful administrative experience as Department Chair, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean and/ or Program Director.in a health / allied health program
  • Experience and successful track record in allied health / health careers higher education accreditation procedures, regulatory compliance, articulation processes and program review required. Experience in leading/managing educational accreditation processes in areas such as Nursing, Physician’s Assistance, Surgical Technology, etc. required.
  • Minimum seven to ten (7 -10) years of experience teaching in a higher education setting.
  • Prior leadership experience in a health care clinical setting required along with appropriate State Licensure.
  • Strong project management skills with exceptional communication skills (written, verbal, presentation).
  • Must have documented and exceptionally strong leadership and management skills. Must have experience leading faculty, staff and programs while achieving key strategic goals.
  • Ability to make good judgments, set appropriate priorities, lead change and evaluate the effectiveness of decisions, plans, programs and employees. Dean, Health Career Programs
  • Must have experience in activities that focus on assessment of student learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism in one’s work experience.
  • Experience preferred working within a unionized setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to create a learning environment that fosters student success.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a technologically integrated environment that fosters innovation within a learning organization.
  • Experience in grant management such as Perkins, Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and other grant funds.
  • Knowledge and experience in program review and evaluation (ICCB & APSA).
