VICE PRESIDENT OF ACADEMIC & STUDENT AFFAIRS MALCOLM X COLLEGE

Malcolm X College seeks a visionary, transformative, and inspiring leader to serve as the next Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). Under the college leadership, and a dynamic and caring faculty and staff, MXC plans to operationalize our forthcoming strategic plan aimed at growing enrollment, increasing retention and completion, increase measurable learning outcomes, closing equity gaps, leading culturally relevant and responsive instruction and student services, development scalable and innovative remote learning practices, and preparing students for the workforce. The VPAA is key in the implementation of this plan.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE : Reporting to the College President, a Vice President – Academic Affairs serves as the college’s Chief Academic Officer, responsible for planning, developing, administering and providing management oversight of the college’s instructional programs (associate degree, skill/certificate, health sciences, and adult education, indirectly oversees the academic processes of the college nursing department), the management and evaluation of instructional faculty, staff and administrators, and the evaluation of programs for compliance with academic and accreditation standards and practices.

As the Chief Academic Officer, the Vice President provides strategic leadership for a college’s instructional functions, working collaboratively with senior administrative staff to develop and implement innovative approaches to enhance academic excellence and provide students with innovative teaching methods, the latest in educational technology, and committed support services.

The Vice President - Academic Affairs also leads and coordinates initiatives in working with senior administrators and external stakeholders to build partnerships, education/career goals pathways, and internship opportunities to enhance and support learning experiences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Provides overall strategic leadership for the college's instructional functions and guidance from the President.
  • Plans, administers, and evaluates the quality of instruction within the college. Directs curriculum review and development.
  • Assists the President in planning, organizing, and directing the operation, staffing, and budgeting needs of the College.
  • Supervises all matters related to curriculum and instruction in the college.
  • Supports College plans to ensure continuous and measurable improvement in student life cycle benchmarks including enrollment, retention, persistence, completion, and post completion success.
  • Facilitates collaborative relationships between the district and college departments to develop a student-centered approach to enrollment and retention.
  • Plans, establishes priorities, assigns work, monitors progress and evaluates results of all academic programs at the College.
  • Supervises, evaluates the performance of and the professional development of all direct reports. Assist the president in the oversight of the Office of Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid and Student Affairs. Directly oversees the Adult Education, Health Sciences and General Education departments. Provides indirect management of the academic processes of the Nursing Department. Coordinates activities of the college academic and student programs through the supervision of the deans.
  • Provides advisory recommendations to the President on all academic faculty appointments including tenure, promotion and lane advancement matters to ensure that such processes comply with the terms of faculty bargaining agreements and CCC's policies and procedures.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and established professional development programs and succession planning for employees for direct reports including college deans, program administrators and non-academic staff.
  • Assists efforts in identifying and implementing creative recruitment and marketing strategies designed to meet student enrollment goals.
  • Works with faculty and deans to develop, evaluate, and modify curricula and programs. Creates and maintains articulation agreements.
  • Assists the Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness in the management of grant processes inclusive of research and review of grant opportunities, completion of new grant applications, grant implementation, and maintenance grants' audit and compliance review requirements.
  • Proactively research and integrates national best practices for community college and higher education to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Collaborates with Institutional Effectiveness to establish and implement a culture in which continuous quality improvement and planning activities are integrated, understood, and practiced in a manner consistent with the college's mission, core values, and vision.
  • Cultivates an organizational culture of ethical behavior, positivity, professionalism, employee empowerment, and productivity.
  • Participate in college and district governance and strategic planning.
  • May serve as chief administrator of the college in the absence of the president.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Master’s degree from an accredited institution is required; an earned Doctorate degree from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Five (5) years administrative experience is required, preferably in a community college setting. Experience should include program development, strategic planning, operational oversight, and fiscal management.
  • Five (5) years teaching in a unionized, higher education setting is preferred.
  • A data-informed problem solver and decision maker, with demonstrated ability to move initiatives forward in the areas of curriculum development, program evaluation and assessment, and enrollment management
  • A strong manager with demonstrated management skills in budget and resource development, grant funding, and partnership building
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
