Title: Associate Director for STEM and Healthcare Advising

Position Purpose:

The Associate Director for STEM and Healthcare Advising (The Associate Director) serves as a leader within the Bates Center for Purposeful Work (The Center), aligning their work with the mission, vision, and values of The Center. The successful candidate could perform the duties as either full-time or part-time (as a job share), depending on applicant’s qualifications, experiences and interest. Please indicate your preference in written materials. The Center for Purposeful Work is committed to a creative approach to recruiting and retaining talented members of our team.

The Associate Director works with students over their four years who are interested in exploring careers in STEM fields and healthcare. This is primarily accomplished through one on one and group advising. A second, and equally important responsibility is working with campus colleagues, alumni and parents to organize, design and offer high impact programs to introduce students to careers in STEM fields and healthcare through job shadows, internships, roadshows and industry spotlights.

The Associate Director will have an understanding or experience in a related industry and of the graduate education necessary to succeed in medical and STEM fields. The Associate Director collaborates closely with the Faculty Fellow for Medical Studies, Healthcare and STEM Advising, faculty from relevant departments (e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Physics & Astronomy) and Advancement and Admission colleagues to identify and cultivate internal and external experiential opportunities for students to explore interests in healthcare and STEM fields.

Job Duties:
  • The Associate Director maintains a caseload of students and alumni, advising them on all aspects of the career development process. This could include general career counseling; search and application processes for job shadows, internships and jobs after graduation; interview prep; alumni networking; and providing feedback on personal statements for graduate and professional schools. Appointments are conducted on campus, via Zoom and telephone, and the Associate Director maintains case notes on an internal tracking platform.
  • The Associate Director will develop an understanding of the non-academic experiences required for successful medical school and other pre-health program admission, to best advise Bates applicants. This includes cultivating relationships with current professionals in healthcare, behavioral sciences and STEM related careers.
  • The Associate Director develops and utilizes electronic communications to disseminate information on medical, health, and science topics, internships, and jobs to students and alumni.
  • The Associate Director will demonstrate experience in the career and intellectual development of undergraduates enrolled in a selective liberal arts and sciences program.
  • The Associate Director will work in conjunction with the pre-law and pre-business advisors on programming related to graduate and professional school advising.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.

Experience

3-5 years of relevant experience which could include: direct career or academic advising in an educational setting; work in a STEM related field; work that applicants feel is relevant to the skills required in the position description.
