Summary/Objective

The Coordinator, Internships & Employer Relations, is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day functions of all internship-related processes for the AU Cornerstone program, which requires developing and maintaining relationships with external employers, the AU Career Center, and other campus partners. The Coordinator also works closely with the Coordinator, AU Cornerstone to ensure overall student success in the AU Cornerstone program especially as it pertains to students’ preparation and search process for an internship, and their experiences during the professional experience.

Additionally, the Coordinator, Internships & Employer Relations, contributes to the execution of the University College and AU Compass Living-Learning Communities.

Essential Functions
  1. Internship Advising: The Coordinator, Internships & Employer Relations will oversee and be responsible for directly advising all AU Cornerstone students through the internship search process to successfully assist students with securing an internship. This includes coordinating and facilitating both one-on-one and group advising opportunities for students throughout the academic year, managing the resume/cover letter review process in partnership with the Career Center, and overseeing the AU Cornerstone Roadmap, a guide for students to follow throughout the academic year.
  2. Internship Program Management: The Coordinator, Internships & Employer Relations works with the Career Center and the Office of Global and Immersive Studies on coordinating AU Cornerstone’s involvement in internship fairs and logistics for internship educational opportunities that AU Cornerstone students must attend during the fall semester. The position attends all internship-related events to represent the AU Cornerstone team and support the program’s students in attendance. This position also collaborates with the Living-Learning Community (LLC) team on LLC events and special projects.
  3. Employer Outreach and Relationship Management: To assist with establishing new relationships and strengthening existing relationships with key employers to increase the number of experiential, networking, and employment opportunities available to AU Cornerstone students, the Coordinator will: Evaluate leads from a variety of sources, including but not limited to online postings, faculty and staff referrals, internship sites, and external job fairs. Conduct phone, e-mail, and in-person/virtual meetings to establish and maintain strong relationships with employers.
  4. Communications: With the Assistant Director, University College and Sophomore LLCs, and the Coordinator, AU Cornerstone, this position assists with managing and implementing communications for the AU Cornerstone program. This position specifically focuses on the development of communications directly related to internship advising and employer relations.
  5. Other duties as assigned.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • Part-Time, 25 hours a week.
  • Non-Exempt.
  • This position is union-eligible.
  • Occasional evening and weekend obligations.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience (full-time experience, graduate assistantships, and undergraduate student leader roles are all considered relevant experience).
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Experience coaching/advising college students. Experience with internship programs. Experience creating and distributing communications. Understanding of college student development. Experience working in an environment striving to incorporate anti-racist practices.
Union Eligibility

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 500. That means the terms and conditions of your employment are governed by university policy (including the Staff Personnel Policies Manual) and any collective bargaining agreement entered into between American University and SEIU Local 500.
