The Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering (GSBSE) is a unique, multi-institutional research consortium that pioneers collaborative, transdisciplinary research through Maine’s largest biomedical Ph.D. program and across a vast affiliated faculty network connecting over a dozen departments at the University of Maine and four primary partner institutions of The Jackson Laboratory, the MaineHealth Institute of Research, the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, and the University of New England. The GSBSE through the University of Maine offers a Ph.D. in Biomedical Science, a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, and a Professional Science Masters (PSM) in Bioinformatics.

As the head of the GSBSE, the Director reports to the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School. This is a 12-month administrative position with tenure in a department or school at the University of Maine. The main responsibilities consist of providing the intellectual and organizational leadership to advance the program's mission and goals. As part of this, the Director, while heading the GSBSE Leadership Team, will oversee and coordinate the GSBSE programmatic and administrative committees, recruitment and retention of a diverse community of students, and curricular offerings and enhancements. Moreover, the Director will lead the realization of a strategic plan addressing the needs and opportunities for the next phase of GSBSE’s growth and development, while maintaining and growing collaborative relationships with the partner institutions and relevant state, national, and international organizations, and organizing efforts for pursuit of external funding in support of GSBSE programs and students.
