Coordinator - Writing Center

FLCC is looking for an academic professional who has a desire to change students' lives by enhancing their writing skills through tutoring, workshops and providing a safe space to learn and grow.

This is a 10-month FT professional position.

The Coordinator of the Writing Center oversees the daily operation of the Writing Center and consults with the Assistant Director of Tutoring & Learning Support, the Humanities Department, and faculty from other writing intensive disciplines to enhance the culture of writing on campus. The Coordinator provides direct tutoring support minimally 20 hours each week and provides direct follow-up to referrals from faculty to the Write Place. The Coordinator, in consultation with the Assistant Director of Tutoring and Learning Support, works with faculty on projects related to writing including, but not limited to, hosting writing workshops, appropriate use of technology workshops, and creation of materials supporting course assignments. In addition, the Coordinator assists with the reaccreditation or other planning tasks as outlined by the Assistant
Director.

Qualifications:
A. Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred emphasis in Composition, Rhetoric, or English preferred. Knowledge of contemporary writing center pedagogy required.
B. Experience: Two years administrative experience in a writing center, writing program,
or related academic support area or two years of teaching, tutoring, or mentoring experience.
C. Special Skills: Actively fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion at the College and engages community development strategies that strengthen relationships. Ability to relate to a diverse student population and academic community.

Specific Responsibilities:
A. Provide direct writing support services to students and members of the college community.

1. Support writing center staff in their ability to provide students with personalized writing tutoring and mentorship that reflects and integrates current writing center pedagogy and practice, for a wide range of writing projects across the curriculum.

2. Coordinate and provide in-person and online Writing Center presence and support of tutoring services.

3. Collaborate with support staff at campus center locations to provide writing tutoring services, share expertise and address any tutoring matters.

4. Develop, plan, and schedule writing workshops and class visits to support student writers across the curriculum in coordination with faculty members and ASAP staff.

5. Direct outreach to referrals for students who need additional writing support.

B. In consultation with the Assistant Director, select, coordinate, manage, and provide ongoing professional development for writing center staff.

1. In consultation with Assistant Director, ensure hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising professional writing center tutors and student peer tutors

2. Collaborate with other tutoring center coordinators and learning support specialists to plan, execute, and evaluate peer tutor training compliant with the International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) Level I Certification or other field-recognized tutoring certification.

C. Collaborate closely with Academic and Student Affairs departments dedicated to student success.

1. Assist and contribute to the cross-departmental leadership team (as noted above) to sustain a comprehensive, college-wide writing program that works with faculty across the curriculum as they design and implement effective writing in their courses.

2. Actively participate in Academic Success and Access Programs office and Humanities Department meetings on a regular basis and provide monthly updates on Writing Center usage and tutoring schedule.

3. Work with faculty to develop new resources for FLCC specific assignments, utilizing technology and offering workshops accordingly.

4. Contribute to departmental and college-wide committees as needed.

D. In collaboration with the Assistant Director, guide the Writing Center’s strategic planning and development and implement the on-going assessment of the Writing Center as an academic support service provider and key player in the college-wide assessment of writing.

E. Other duties as assigned.

2. The set work schedule varies daily and includes scheduled daytime, evening, and weekend hours at 37.5 hours.
