Research Assistant Professor (RAP) in the Division of Landscape Architecture

Applications are invited for appointment as Research Assistant Professor in Computational Landscape Modeling in the Division of Landscape Architecture (DLA) in the Faculty of Architecture (Ref.: 520605), to commence as soon as possible, on a one-year temporary basis.

Applicants should possess a doctoral degree by research (Ph.D., D.Sc., or equivalent) in landscape, geography, environmental science, GIS, remote sensing, and computer science or a related field. They should also have demonstrated research on remote sensing big data processing and spatiotemporal analysis, deep learning and advanced statistics, and urban green/blue space, thermal environment, land cover/use change, landscape ecology, etc., and a strong quantitative, analytical, and computational background. Those who have experience in machine learning, cloud-computing, and geospatial techniques for the built and natural environment monitoring, GIS and remote sensing data analysis to model human-environment interactions, and landscape process modeling to inform geo-design strategies for addressing environmental challenges are highly preferred. Applicants with relevant post-doctoral work experience and an excellent publication and teaching track record may also be considered.

The appointee will contribute to computational landscape research in the Division, including geospatial big data analysis, machine learning and generative computing techniques, built and natural environment monitoring, and evidence-based geo-design. He/She is required to collect and pre-process remote sensing and GIS big data; develop and validate algorithms to extract thematic information (land use functions, green/blue space, thermal environment, critical infrastructure, landscape, etc.) from multi-sensor and multi-scale imagery; to build data-AI-driven models to quantify built and natural environment changes and associated human-environment interactions from local to regional scales; and develop research reports, presentations, and high-quality publications. He/She will also be expected to teach elective courses and supervise MSc (SED) students at the DLA.

Enquiries about the duties of the post should be sent to christine-lo@hku.hk . Information about the Division and MSc(SED) Programme can be obtained at https://www.arch.hku.hk/programmes_/dla/ ; https://fac.arch.hku.hk/mscsed/ .

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

The University only accepts online applications for the above post. Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date C.V. Review of applications will start as soon as possible and continue until June 30, 2023 (extended to November 30, 2023) , or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
