The Application Developer will work as an integral member of the ARC games production team, participating in daily standups, executing the coding of the games, informing the ARC platform team of maintenance and feature needs, and providing handoff to the QA team.

Wharton Interactive develops innovative platforms, simulations, and games to create new kinds of learning experiences to transform and democratize education. Grounded in research and extensive experience, Wharton Interactive's serious games create active learning opportunities that challenge students to effectively apply theoretical concepts and ultimately own their learning.
The Application Developer will support Wharton Interactive in the design, scope, and coding of Alternate Reality Courseware (ARC) serious games and Data Applications. The Application Developer will work as an integral member of the ARC games production team, participating in daily standups, executing the coding of the games, informing the ARC platform team of maintenance and feature needs, and providing handoff to the QA team.
While ARC has its own programming language, a skilled programmer in a modern software development language will be successful (e.g. JavaScript), especially given the training provided by Wharton Interactive. Coding skills in Python or another common scripting language is required. Also required are strong communication skills, as well as a natural curiosity to learn beyond the technical realm to the subject matter that our ARC games teach. Wharton Interactive is a lean, agile team that is a high-growth edtech startup within the larger University of Pennsylvania ecosystem. Our games and experiences are integrated into thousands of classes globally. The successful candidate must also be a self-starter, who remains productive and positive in a fast paced, complex environment.
Responsibilities include:
- Software Development for ARC games: code the interactive
fiction, adaptive learner feedback, gamified elements, Python-based
Jupyter Notebooks.
- Collaborate with ARC production team members, instructional
designers, and campus departments to scope ARC games, and execute
on project timelines from inception to completion.
- Interact with authors ensuring the interactive experience
delivers on the specified teaching and learning goals, hypothesize
various outcomes of the game, assist with testing code and observe
case use in the classroom.
- Develop technical documentation and collaborate with Wharton
Interactive and external vendors to ensure technology operations
follow computing standards.
- Operate within an agile team, utilizing productivity tools such
as the Atlassian stack, Slack, and modern coding practices such as
test-driven development, unit testing and regression testing.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree and 1-2 years of experience is required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong software engineering skills and basic understanding of the software development life cycle is required
- Experience with common programming language such as HTML, CSS, Javascript, Python, PHP, C++ or Java is required
- Experience with machine learning and Jupyter Notebooks is a plus
- Experience working on agile teams, utilizing the Atlassian stack is a plus
- Familiarity with full-stack application development (back-end and front-end development) is a plus
- Familiarity with database design and management (e.g., MySQL) and managing cloud-based data infrastructures such as AWS is a plus
- Knowledge with web services and API using SOAP, REST, and custom network sockets programming is a plus.
- Knowledge of web frameworks such as Django and Django Rest Framework are a plus
- Proven ability to collaborate and work on team-based projects to meet projects on-time.
- Strong organization and communication skills, ability to work collaboratively in teams with varied expertise (developers, designers, media and other content creators).
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical collaborators.
- Excellent documentation practices and creative problem-solving skills using code and process and/or workflow.
- Ability to learn quickly and master diverse web technologies as institutional needs evolve.
- Understanding of cloud platform services like AWS and understanding of linked open data integrations is a plus.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
