Position Summary and Responsibilities
Vassar College is seeking a full-time Director of the College Store to create the brand image of the College along with an online course material service. The position will supervise and direct all aspects of a full-service college store including retail merchandise and timely availability of curriculum materials and services. The director will oversee all aspects of the operation including: marketing, operational policies and procedures, financial, inventory management, controls, personnel, and operational issues.

Responsibilities:
Financial
  • Manage the resources required to run an operation that generates sufficient revenues to cover labor, promotional and operational costs, and “rent” to the College
  • Establish and maintain pricing strategy
  • Provide monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and expense activity management reports


Inventory Management
  • Oversee and direct the buying, selling, and marketing of all merchandise
  • Oversee product selection, assortment development, order placement, reorders and appropriate usage of trademark logos
  • Maintain inventory at optimum levels to meet current needs and appropriately forecast future requirements
  • Responsible for monitoring and implementing course material transition based on market trends i.e. text rental, ebooks, other course materials delivery methods
Personnel
  • Manage college store employees comprised of full time unionized permanent and student staff
  • Develop and lead a staff with the capabilities to effectively promote the store, to consistently provide the highest level of customer service and to ensure that the College Store is an inviting destination within the community
  • Schedule staff to meet needs of the operations
Operations
  • Develop, implement and train the team on operational best practices
  • Analyze retail and market trends to meet student and customer needs
  • Develop and maintain marketing and branding strategies
  • Collaborate with campus partners to engage and support campus constituents and campus events
  • Provide and maintain an inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment to students, faculty, visitors, and other members of the community through a well-organized store plan and lay out


Qualifications
Qualifications
  • Five years related leadership/management experience in a college store or other retail management.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and administer financial goals of the store, and ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Must be willing and able to work varied hours, days, nights, and weekends as business dictates.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Retail book experience.
