Job Summary
The 12-month annual Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor position includes teaching and service responsibilities throughout the fall, spring, and summer semesters that primarily support the Nutritional Sciences undergraduate program and the MPH-Nutrition & Dietetics program.
It is anticipated that the Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor will be the instructor for courses including (but not limited to) Nutrition Communication & Education (undergraduate), Hunger at Home: Food and Nutrition Security in Milwaukee County (undergraduate), Current Issues in Nutrition and Dietetics (graduate), Advanced Nutrition Education (graduate), and Professional Preparation in Nutrition and Dietetics (graduate).
Depending upon experience and expertise, the successful candidate may have the opportunity to instruct the Food Systems Management and Field Experience course in the MPH-Nutrition and Dietetics program. The individual in that role will be responsible for coordinating, implementing, and monitoring the supervised experiential learning (SEL) opportunities integrated into that course.
Responsibilities associated with this position are as follows:
- Cultivate a student-centered, innovative instructional environment that supports dynamic and engaging classroom experiences that facilitate the attainment of nutrition and dietetics-related knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Revise (as needed) and deliver existing academic courses associated with the undergraduate Nutritional Sciences program.
- Fully develop and deliver several new courses associated with the MPH-Nutrition and Dietetics program.
- Develop and integrate learning activities that facilitate students' development of cross-cultural communication skills and nurtures a disposition towards cultural humility.
- In collaboration with the Program Director, assist with
MPH-Nutrition and Dietetics program accreditation tasks including:
- Maintaining program-level documentation regarding SEL hours and ensuring programmatic adherence to ACEND SEL-related requirements.
- Maintaining the program's student records, specifically student accrual of SEL hours and progress towards attaining ACEND competencies.
- Assisting with maintenance of the Competency Assessment Plan and Curriculum Map as the program and its courses are revised in accordance with the Continuous Program Improvement Plan.
- Provide one-on-one mentorship to graduate students in MPH-Nutrition and Dietetics program
- In partnership with the Program Director and program faculty/staff, actively participate in the program evaluation and improvement process, including formal curriculum review and revision.
- In partnership with the Program Director and program faculty/staff, assist with student recruitment/admissions, orientation, advisement, and evaluation, as appropriate.
- All other duties as assigned.
For service to UWM and the profession, the individual hired for this position will work collaboratively within and outside of the Zilber College of Public Health. UWM service includes attending program and College meetings, as well as serving on College and campus committees. Participation in professional development and service, such as maintenance of credentials and attending conferences, is expected.
The specific responsibilities associated with this position may be adapted in response to the evolving needs of the Nutritional Sciences undergraduate program, MPH-Nutrition and Dietetics program, and the Zilber College of Public Health.
The preferred start date for this position is August 21, 2023 but depending on the situation and successful candidate, a spring semester start date may also be an option.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in nutritional sciences or related discipline
- Two years of experience in nutrition-related education including teaching courses, creating and/or revising curriculum, advising and/or mentoring students
- Two years of professional experience in nutrition-related program development, delivery, and/or administration (e.g., disease prevention programming, anti-hunger initiatives)
- Ability to work effectively and collegially with administrators, faculty, staff, and students
- Knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with individuals (e.g., students, colleagues, community members) from different cultural backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in nutritional sciences or related discipline (ABD considered)
- Credentialed as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)
- Professional experience providing nutrition counseling to individuals and/or groups
- Professional experience with food and nutrition security-related policy, programs, or initiatives
- Professional experience engaging with media outlets or media technology to disseminate nutrition and/or health-related education
- Professional experience in food systems management/food service management
- Experience with placement, monitoring, and/or mentoring students in internship related experiences
- Instructional experience in an ACEND-accredited program
- Experience with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas)
