The Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce adjunct teaching position(s) in the guitar department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, commencing July 1 2023. The successful candidate(s) will teach at one or more of these locations: Howard County and/or Towson Campus.

About us:

With approximately 2,500 students passing through its doors every week, the Peabody Preparatory is Baltimore’s premier community school for the performing arts. It is open to students of all ages and levels of ability with offerings ranging from early childhood classes to programs for adults and professional musicians. The Peabody Preparatory shares space with the Peabody Conservatory in downtown Baltimore, and has three satellite campuses in the communities of Towson, Annapolis, and Howard County, MD.

The successful candidate will join a highly skilled and dedicated guitar faculty as part of a vibrant and growing department committed to helping all students achieve their potential; we embrace the novice musician as well as the serious student aspiring toward a career in music. Ideal candidates should be experienced in teaching classical guitar to students of all ages and experience levels and comfortable with both in-person and online modalities.

Duties:
  • Teach classical guitar lessons to beginner and advanced students of all ages; follow Pre-Twinkle guitar curriculum for beginners ages 4 – 8, teach Suzuki group classes, leveled ensemble classes, and adult beginner classes as needed.
  • Participate in annual professional development as needed.
  • Assist with end–of-semester performances, attend faculty meetings, substitute teach as needed.
  • Assist with Fret Fest, the annual guitar festival held Late February/Early March at the downtown Peabody Institute location.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in music and/or music education required. Master’s degree or equivalent experience and training preferred.
  • Experience as a classical guitar instructor to both advanced and beginner students of all ages.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Some experience teaching group classes and/or directing ensembles preferred.
  • Familiarity with Suzuki music education preferred.
  • Some familiarity with popular styles of guitar is welcome, but not required.

Upon receipt of materials, some applicants will be selected to interview in person which will include in-person teaching of both elementary age and older students.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
