Executive Director - Student Athletic Support Services

JOB SUMMARY

The Executive Director oversees the development, implementation, and management of a comprehensive academic monitoring, advising, and student support program for student athletes. Serves as liaison with appropriate admissions, academic, advising, and student support units across campus. Supervise and coordinate the Assistant Director, Athletic Support Specialist, and the NU graduate assistantship/Internship position(s).Provide direct advising services to student-athletes for assigned teams, as necessary, and must be qualified to do the following:

  • Oversee the planning, development, and implementation of strategies conducive to the academic, athletic, and personal development of the student-athletes at Northeastern University.
  • Work in collaboration with appropriate student support units to to track student performance and campus engagement and develop and maintain strategies to enhance student-athlete academic success and eventual graduation from the university, including major selection, co-op assistance, and career counseling.
  • Utilize a variety of university systems to advise, develop, and track at-risk student progress and assist with development of programs aimed at improving retention and graduation rates for student athletes.
  • Maintain a strong relationship with the Athletics and Recreation Department (administrators and coaches) to identify trends in student-athlete academic performance and gather input on improving support for the student-athlete academic experience.
  • Work closely with SASS Assistant Director and Associate Athletic Director for Compliance in matters related to academic/NCAA athletic eligibility, Academic Progress Rate (APR), and Graduation Success Rate (GSR). Review and create Eligibility Certification Sheets following each fall and spring semester and monitor Progress Towards Degree (PTD) for assigned student-athlete caseload.
  • Conduct workshops for new student orientation , manage SASS Study Hall, Mentor and Tutoring programs, and program workshops.
  • Act as Liaison for SASS and Sports Performance Office to maintain open and transparent communication along with a healthy working relationship.
  • Manage change as necessary and administer and ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with the Vice Provost in matters related to academic affairs, academic/athletic eligibility, and program review and development.


MINIMUM QUALIFICTAIONS

Knowledge and skills for this role typically obtained through a Master's degree required with 6-8 years of academic support, advising, counseling, and development of programs for student success, preferably working with student athletes at the Division 1 level.
  • Academic background in Psychology, Sport Psychology, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, Education and/or Athletic Counseling preferred
  • Knowledge of academic guidance counseling - active listening skills, complex problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate student-athletes to academically achieve
  • Demonstrated record of developing and implementing student-athlete academic support programming, and using data-driven approaches to measure efficacy and success of those programs
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills
  • Strong written, oral communication and expression
  • Computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel required; knowledge of Banner, DARS, Salesforce, ACS preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and knowledge of operational procedures at the university level.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required


KEY RESPONSIBIITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

Management of the day-to-day and long-range operations, development, and programming of a multifaceted Student-Athlete Support Center:
  • Develop and implement programs that helps student-athletes self-actualize learning strategies and other academic success tools, and measure efficacy of those programs using data-driven evaluation approaches.
  • Actively utilize data that is collected regarding student athlete participation in SASS program, use of introduced tools and strategies, preferences for usage of tools and strategies and overall satisfaction of programming.
  • Hiring, training and evaluation of all staff.
  • Oversee NCAA academic certification with all academic advisors, ensuring appropriate documentation is completed, and academic eligibility issues are addressed for all student-athletes each semester.
  • Develop, oversee, and continuously improve all SASS programs that support retention and graduation of student-athletes.
  • Conduct regular meetings and maintain close communication channels with the Director and staff of the Athletics and Recreation Department as well as coaches.

  • Conduct regular meetings and maintain close communication channels with the Director and staff of the Athletics and Recreation Department as well as coaches.


NCAA Continuing Eligibility Certification Officer:
  • Conduct monthly meetings with Associate Athletic Director of Compliance and Deputy Athletic Director/SWA to discuss academic information and NCAA eligibility issues.
  • Oversee data collection regarding continuing eligibility for all varsity teams.
  • Assist with all NCAA academic eligibility waivers and provide an authorized signature on all submitted waivers.
  • Utilize end of term data reports for eligibility certification - 6/18/24 and 40/60/80
  • Direct contact point for Associate Athletic Director of Compliance for APR and all NCAA eligibility reviews, audits, etc.
  • Assist in the evaluation of undergraduate transfer student-athletes in conjunction with the Associate Registrar and assist the process for prospective and incoming graduate transfers.


Serve as liaison with appropriate admissions, academic, advising, and student support units across campus, and external regulatory athletics association(s).

Leadership and supervision for academic support staff.
