Cabrillo College is seeking a Director, Student Equity and Success who u nder general direction, plans, organizes, directs and integrates the Office of Student Equity responsible for increasing equity in instruction, programs and services for targeted student populations such as EOPS, Veterans, Dreamer resource programs and foster youth programs; develops and implements student support programs and professional development programs; and performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Salary:
Current eight-step schedule ranges from
$106,913 to $150,437 per year. Salary placement is determined by documented education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $4,453 per year is provided to eligible employees. Position is scheduled to begin on July 1, 2023, pending ongoing categorical funding and Governing Board ratification.

Full-time administrative/management assignment (225-day work year), 12 months per year, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with evenings and/or weekends as needed.

Educational administrators are required to join the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) and as such must contribute up to 10.25% of their monthly salary to STRS on a pre-tax basis. Please see the Benefits link on the HR webpage for more information.

Work-Life Balance:

This opportunity is a full-time assignment, 12 months per year. Cabrillo administrators enjoy a 225 day work schedule, which equates to an average of 19 self-selected non-work days, 15 set holidays, 3 individual responsibility days off annually. 12 days of sick leave accrue annually.

Examples of Duties

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, controls, integrates and evaluates the work of the Office of Student Equity; with coordinators and staff, develops, implements and monitors work plans to achieve goals and objectives; contributes to the development of and monitors performance against the annual depart­ment budget; manages and directs the development, implementation and evaluation of plans, work processes, systems and procedures to achieve annual goals, objectives and work standards.
  • Directs and manages the performance of staff; directs and oversees the selection of staff; establishes performance requirements and professional development targets for direct reports; regularly monitors performance and provides coaching for performance improvement and development including performance evaluations; accurate reporting of absence time; hears and acts on grievances; subject to concurrence by senior management and Human Resources, approves or takes disciplinary action, up to and including termination, to address performance deficiencies, in accordance with Board Policies, Administrative Procedures, Human Resources procedures and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Provides day-to-day leadership and works with staff to ensure a high-performance, service-oriented work environment that supports achievement of the department’s and District’s mission, objectives and values; promotes workplace diversity, inclusion, cultural competency and a positive work environment.
  • Provides support to reporting managers and/or administrators regarding disciplinary actions and grievances; approves related decisions.
  • With members of Senior Management, participates in the development and implementation of District strategic plans, goals and objectives including Guided Pathways; leads and directs depart­ment staff in the development and application of new methodologies, technologies and business process improvements to achieve higher efficiency, productivity and customer service in department work processes.
  • Plans, directs and integrates student support programs and student equity strategies for the District; oversees the development of the District’s Student Equity Plan in coordination with Guided Pathways and other student success plans; analyzes curricular and co-curricular inequities throughout the District and develops collaborative plans to address inequities; develops and analyzes program tracking systems and reports to assess the effectiveness of programs and services.
  • Through subordinates, plans, manages and implements programs for specifically targeted student populations; oversees recruitment and enrollment of students into college and the targeted student programs; collaborates with instructional and student services depart­ments to develop and initiate projects to ensure student access to financial, educational and student support resources such as tutoring, textbooks, child care, housing, transportation and food; collaborates with community and government social services to assist in meeting student needs.
  • Plans, directs and coordinates with faculty and staff to develop and implement programming and professional development opportunities to promote student diversity, equity and inclusion; oversees or develops credit and non-credit curriculum for both faculty and staff; evaluates outcomes using quantitative and qualitative metrics.
  • Oversees and participates in the tracking, aggregation, analysis and reporting of data extracted from internal relational and external databases; analyzes, evaluates and develops reports, recommen­dations and plans for student equity programs and areas; ensures accuracy and timely submission of mandated reporting.
  • Makes presentations to the Board of Trustees, Cabinet and other District groups.
  • Chairs, staffs and/or serves on District committees and represents the District at local, regional, state and national conferences, meetings, workshops and training seminars.
  • Participates in participatory governance committees, processes and initiatives.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabil­ity, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
OTHER DUTIES
  • Participates in the identification, solicitation and administration of grants, partnerships and other funding opportunities.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation, of community college students, faculty and staff AND
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in public administration, counseling, education or a related field, AND at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible student services experience, of which two (2) years were in a management or supervisory role in a college; OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:
  • Advanced principles, practices, methods and concepts used in the development and implementation of student support programs and services.
  • Direction and goals of a community college student services and student equity program.
  • District and community resources including governmental, community, and social service organiza­tions and their functions.
  • Policy and procedure development.
  • Principles and practices of public administration, including budgeting, purchasing and maintaining public records.
  • Federal, state and District requirements, guidelines, rules and objectives applicable to the Student Success Act, Student Equity and District student support programs and services.
  • Principles and practices of Equal Employment Opportunity in hiring, retention, performance and advancement.
  • Federal and state laws and regulations and District policies and procedures governing community college admissions, registration and student recordkeeping including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, California Education Code and Title IV.
  • Principles and practices of sound business communication.

  • Principles and practices of strategic planning.
  • Basic principles and practices of organizational improvement, equity and culture change.

Skills and Abilities to:
  • Plan, organize and direct the various programs, operations and activities of the Student Equity department.
  • Define issues, analyze problems, evaluate alternatives and develop sound, independent conclusions and recommendations on complex and sensitive diversity, equity and inclusion issues.
  • Work collaboratively with District deans, directors, faculty and the community to provide training, expert advice and counsel and to develop solutions to student equity problems.
  • Organize, set priorities and exercise expert, independent judgment within areas of responsibility.
  • Develop and maintain an inclusive work environment that fosters diversity, respect and engagement.
  • Develop and implement appropriate procedures and controls.
  • Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive correspondence, reports, studies and other written materials.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand, interpret, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and ordinances.
  • Represent the District effectively in negotiations and dealings with the other educational institutions, community groups, the Chancellor’s office, students and the public.
  • Make presentations and present proposals and recommendations clearly, logically and persuasively to diverse audiences.
  • Operate a computer and use standard business software.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
A valid California driver’s license or ability to access and use alternative transportation.
