Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a driven, entrepreneurial, multi-skilled Professional Research Associate. In this role you will design, fabricate, and deploy the newest generation of Nobel prize winning dual frequency comb laser sensors for applications from atmospheric pollutant detection to biomedicine. You will also take part in studies to determine the commercial potential of the system.

Who We Are

We are a vibrant, interdisciplinary group of engineers and scientists focused on translating cutting edge science into practice. The position will be at the intersection of the Rieker and Diddams labs at the University of Colorado, which are working together to positively impact our future by creating laser sensors for a range of science and applications. Our current projects range from long distance trace gas detection in the atmosphere to laboratory studies in support of wildland fire, hypersonic, and biomedical applications.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Hands-on engineering:
  • Design, fabrication, and deployment of laser sensors:
    • CAD / procurement / fabrication.
    • Fiber and free space optics and photonics design and fabrication.
    • Electronics design and programming.


Entrepreneurship:
  • Explore the commercial potential of the laser sensors.
  • Lead team through National Science Foundation Starting Blocks program to identify, contact, and interview potential end-users of the system.
  • Basic economic analysis of commercial opportunities.
What We Can Offer

The annual salary for this appointment will be $68,500.

What We Require

BS or greater in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

What You Will Need

Technical Skills:
  • Experience in component and system design and troubleshooting.
  • Basic machining experience (mill, lathe, etc.).
  • Soldering experience (thru hole and surface mount).
  • Programming experience (Python desired, or Matlab/C++ and willingness to learn).
Personal Skills:
  • Self-driven and reliable.
  • Creative problem solver.
  • Adaptable.
  • Very strong professional communication and organizational skills.
  • Entrepreneurial.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Fiber and freespace optics background desirable but not required.
  • Basic entrepreneurial experience is a plus but not required.
